The warehouse stood between two abandoned industrial buildings. Rust covered its metal doors. Rainwater gathered in the cracks of the pavement, reflecting the distant lights of passing vehicles.

Victor's security team remained outside while he and Isabella entered the building with Dominic.

Inside, the air smelled of dust and damp concrete.

Rows of empty shelves stretched into darkness.

At the far end stood an office with a broken window and a rusted filing cabinet.

Isabella walked toward it.

"Someone has been here recently," she said.

Victor examined the floor.

There were fresh marks in the dust near the cabinet.

Dominic opened the drawers one by one.

Most were empty.

The final drawer was locked.

Victor forced it open.

Inside lay a thin metal box.

Isabella recognized the initials engraved on its lid.

E.M.

Her mother's initials.

For a moment, she could not move.

She had spent ten years chasing rumors, studying records, and asking strangers questions they did not want to answer.

Now she was standing in front of something Elena had touched.

Isabella opened the box.

Inside were several envelopes, a small notebook, and a storage device wrapped in a piece of cloth.

She picked up the notebook.

The first page contained a handwritten list of company names.

The second page contained dates and account numbers.

The third page contained the names of several people who had appeared in public alongside Adrian Cross.

At the bottom of the final page was a message.

If this reaches Isabella, tell her that I never stopped trying to come home.

Isabella pressed the notebook against her chest.

For the first time that night, her composure broke.

Victor stood several feet away, watching silently.

He wanted to say something.

He wanted to offer an explanation.

But he knew that every comforting word would sound hollow coming from him.

He had known Elena.

He had once trusted her.

And when she needed him to listen, he had turned away.

Isabella wiped her eyes and returned the notebook to the box.

"We need to make copies of everything," she said.

Victor nodded.

"Dominic, contact our legal adviser."

"No," Isabella interrupted.

Both men looked at her.

"We don't send this to anyone connected to your organization. We make independent copies and send them to people Adrian cannot easily silence."

Victor considered the suggestion.

Then he nodded again.

"Do it your way."

They had barely reached the warehouse entrance when the lights outside suddenly went dark.

Dominic stopped.

Victor's expression changed.

Somewhere beyond the building, an engine started.

Then another.

Isabella looked at the box in her hands.

"They knew we were coming."

Victor moved toward the entrance.

"No," he said quietly. "They knew we would eventually find it."

A voice emerged from the darkness outside.

"Victor."

Adrian Cross stepped into the light.

He wore a dark overcoat and carried a black umbrella. His expression was calm, almost friendly.

Two men stood behind him.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Adrian looked at Isabella.

"So," he said, "Elena's daughter finally found her mother's little collection."

Chapter 10: The Man Who Smiled at Funerals

Adrian Cross had always considered himself more intelligent than Victor Kane.

Victor was powerful, but power attracted attention. Victor used fear, and fear created enemies.

Adrian preferred influence.

He knew which official wanted money, which businessman wanted protection, which journalist wanted a career, and which criminal wanted to believe he was indispensable.

He rarely needed to threaten anyone directly.

He simply arranged circumstances until people did what he wanted.

For twenty years, he had used Victor's reputation as a shield.

When money disappeared, Adrian blamed careless employees.

When investigators came close, he redirected their attention toward Victor.

When someone threatened to expose the truth, he made sure the evidence became unreliable.

Elena Moretti had been the first person to understand how the system worked.

She had discovered the hidden accounts and copied the records.

Adrian had expected her to become frightened.

He had expected her to accept a generous payment, leave the city, and remain silent.

Instead, she had refused.

She had told him that no amount of money would convince her to abandon her daughter or betray the people whose lives had been damaged by the organization.

Adrian had decided that Elena was too dangerous to leave alone.

But he had underestimated one thing.

She had prepared for the possibility that she might never return.

The ledger had survived.

And now her daughter had found it.

Adrian looked at Victor.

"You should have stayed out of this."

Victor's face remained expressionless.

"You stole from me."

"I managed your affairs."

"You lied to me."

"I protected you from information you weren't equipped to handle."

Victor took a step forward.

"You expect me to believe that?"

Adrian sighed.

"Victor, look at yourself. You built an empire out of fear and called it loyalty. You surrounded yourself with men who would never tell you when you were wrong. You made every decision as though the entire world existed to serve you."

He gestured toward Isabella.

"And now you're risking everything because the daughter of a woman you barely remember has arrived with a notebook."

Isabella held the metal box tightly.

"My mother remembered you."

Adrian turned toward her.

"Your mother was a very intelligent woman."

"She knew what you were doing."

"She knew enough to become a problem."

Victor's expression darkened.

"What happened to her?"

Adrian smiled faintly.

"You still think the world owes you answers."

"What happened to Elena?"

Adrian glanced at Isabella.

"Your mother disappeared because she refused to understand that truth is not always useful."

Isabella felt her hands tighten around the box.

"Is she alive?"
