Several letters showed that she had contacted legal representatives and asked for help.

One response had been returned unopened.

Another had promised to investigate but never followed through.

The final document was a letter addressed to Victor Kane.

It had never been sent.

Isabella read it slowly.

Victor,

I know you believe that I have betrayed you. I know Adrian has told you that I stole money and abandoned the organization.

But I need you to understand that I tried to warn you.

I told you that the people around you were using your reputation to protect themselves. I told you that your decisions were making it easier for them to hurt people who had never chosen this life.

You told me that I didn't understand power.

Perhaps I don't.

But I understand responsibility.

You have the ability to change what happens next. You can choose to investigate the truth, or you can continue believing the people who tell you what you want to hear.

I cannot make that decision for you.

I only hope that one day you will understand why I could not remain silent.

Isabella folded the letter.

Her mother had tried to save Victor from the very thing he had become.

She had tried to warn him before Adrian took control.

And Victor had ignored her.

Isabella now possessed enough evidence to expose Adrian.

But she also understood that the ledger would reveal the crimes committed by Victor's organization.

She had a choice.

She could release everything and allow the consequences to unfold.

Or she could give Victor an opportunity to cooperate with an investigation and finally acknowledge what he had done.

She chose neither revenge nor forgiveness.

She chose the truth.

She contacted an independent legal team and arranged for verified copies of the records to be delivered through several separate channels.

No single person would control the evidence.

No one could quietly make it disappear.

Then she called Victor.

"I found the original ledger," she said.

There was a long silence.

"Where?" he asked.

"Somewhere your people never thought to look."

"Does it prove what you suspected?"

"It proves more than that."

Victor exhaled slowly.

"What happens now?"

Isabella looked out the window.

"Now everyone gets to decide whether they want to keep lying."

Chapter 14: The Night of the Black Tie Gala

Adrian Cross was hosting a charity gala that Saturday evening.

The event was held in a luxury hotel overlooking the river. Politicians, investors, celebrities, and business leaders filled the ballroom beneath enormous chandeliers.

Photographers crowded the entrance.

Waiters moved between tables carrying silver trays.

A string quartet played beside the stage.

Adrian stood near the center of the room, greeting guests with the practiced warmth of a man who had spent his entire life making powerful people feel important.

He had received several troubling messages that morning.

An account had been accessed.

A document had been copied.

Someone had contacted an attorney who had once investigated his businesses.

He did not know exactly what Isabella possessed.

But he knew the ledger had probably been found.

He also knew that if the evidence became public, his carefully constructed reputation would collapse.

So he decided to act before anyone could stop him.

He invited Victor Kane to the gala.

The invitation was framed as an opportunity to resolve their differences privately.

Victor understood the real purpose.

Adrian wanted to determine how much Victor knew.

He wanted to find out whether Isabella had given him the original records.

And if possible, he wanted to convince Victor that the only way to survive was to sacrifice her.

Victor accepted the invitation.

He arrived wearing a black suit and no visible security.

Adrian greeted him with a smile.

"Victor. I wasn't sure you'd come."

"I've spent too many years avoiding conversations I should have had."

Adrian studied him.

"That's unusually philosophical."

"Perhaps I'm getting old."

They exchanged polite words while photographers took pictures nearby.

Then Adrian lowered his voice.

"We need to discuss the woman."

Victor looked toward the ballroom entrance.

Isabella had arrived.

She wore a black evening dress and carried a small silver clutch. She moved through the crowd without appearing hurried or nervous.

Several guests glanced at her.

Adrian's smile tightened.

"You brought her."

"She was invited."

"By whom?"

"Me."

Adrian's eyes hardened.

"You're making a mistake."

Victor looked directly at him.

"That is something I've heard before."

Isabella approached them.

"Good evening, Adrian."

He offered his hand.

She did not take it.

"I believe we have unfinished business," she said.

Adrian maintained his smile.

"Business is such an unpleasant word for an evening like this."

"Then let's call it a conversation."

Victor glanced toward the stage.

The gala was about to begin.

Adrian gestured toward a private room near the back of the ballroom.

"Perhaps we should speak somewhere quieter."

"No," Isabella replied.

Adrian paused.

She continued.

"For years, you relied on private rooms, secret accounts, and people who were afraid to speak. I'm tired of private conversations."

A few nearby guests turned toward them.

Adrian's expression remained composed, but his eyes had become cold.

"Be careful. You don't know what you're accusing me of."

"Actually, I know exactly what I'm accusing you of."

She opened her clutch and removed a single page.

It was a summary of the financial records in the original ledger.

She did not read every detail aloud. She did not need to.

She simply placed the page on a nearby table and looked at Adrian.

"These transactions connect your companies to the hidden accounts you claimed never existed. The dates match the transfers Elena Moretti documented before she disappeared."
