"Or you let the police deal with what you've done."
Troy looked around.
Then laughed.
"You think I'm scared of you?"
Joseph shook his head.
"No."
He pointed behind Troy.
"I'm telling you to be scared of the evidence."
Police lights appeared at the end of the street.
Troy's face changed.
Two officers stepped out.
One held a warrant.
"Troy Dawson?"
Troy froze.
"Yes."
"You're under arrest."
"For what?"
The officer looked at Caleb.
Then at Troy.
"Assault."
Troy turned toward his friends.
Nobody moved.
Then the officer said:
"And your father is being questioned as part of a separate investigation."
Troy's face went pale.
The case exploded over the next month.
News stations arrived.
Investigators searched Richard Dawson's offices.
Old documents were recovered.
Former employees came forward.
The construction death was reopened.
Then two more cases.
Then another.
Richard Dawson was eventually charged with multiple counts related to fraud, falsified safety records, and obstruction.
Troy lost his scholarship.
His friends abandoned him.
And the boy he'd tried to destroy became the person everyone wanted to interview.
But Caleb refused.
A reporter asked him:
"Why didn't you fight back?"
Caleb answered:
"Because I didn't want to become him."
The reporter asked:
"Do you consider yourself a hero?"
Caleb shook his head.
"No."
"Why not?"
He looked toward Joseph.
"Heroes don't always know they're doing something important."
Joseph smiled.
Caleb continued:
"Sometimes you just see someone who needs help."
Six months later, Caleb stood inside the garage.
A motorcycle engine roared to life.
He smiled.
Joseph walked over.
"You did it."
Caleb wiped his hands.
"What?"
"You rebuilt it."
Caleb looked at the motorcycle.
"I had help."
Joseph shook his head.
"Not this time."
Caleb smiled.
"I guess I'm learning."
Joseph nodded.
Then he handed Caleb an envelope.
Caleb immediately frowned.
"What is that?"
"Open it."
Caleb did.
Inside was a letter.
A scholarship.
Full tuition for a mechanical engineering program.
Caleb stared at it.
"I can't accept this."
