The morning rush had already begun at the Grand Central Transit Terminal in downtown Chicago. Hundreds of passengers moved through the enormous building, dragging suitcases, checking departure boards, and rushing toward their trains.Among them was a middle-aged man named Daniel Mercer.Daniel wore a charcoal-gray suit, a white shirt without a tie, and polished black shoes. His dark hair was neatly combed, and his expression remained calm despite the chaos around him.He carried a small leather briefcase.Nothing about him seemed particularly remarkable. But appearances could be deceiving. As Daniel approached the security checkpoint, a sharp female voice suddenly cut through the noise."Hey! You! Stop right there!"Daniel turned.A blonde police officer in her late thirties was marching toward him. Her name tag read OFFICER REBECCA HAYES.She had a reputation throughout the terminal for being aggressive, impatient, and unwilling to tolerate anyone questioning her authority."Where do you think you're going?" she demanded.Daniel glanced toward the departure gates."I'm catching a train."Rebecca folded her arms."Not until I say you can."Daniel studied her face."Is there a problem, Officer?"Rebecca narrowed her eyes."That's what I'm trying to figure out. You walked straight past the security desk.""I showed my identification to the officer at the entrance.""Well, you haven't shown it to me."Daniel reached into his jacket."Certainly."But before he could retrieve his wallet, Rebecca snapped, "Hands where I can see them!"Several nearby passengers stopped walking.Daniel slowly raised his hands."All right."Rebecca stepped closer."Don't get smart with me.""I'm not.""You people always think you can do whatever you want because you're wearing an expensive suit."Daniel said nothing.Rebecca pointed toward a nearby wall."Stand over there.""May I ask why I'm being detained?"Her expression hardened."Because I told you to."Daniel remained motionless for a moment. Then he quietly replied, "That's not a legal reason."The surrounding crowd fell silent.Rebecca's cheeks flushed."Excuse me?""A police officer needs a lawful basis to detain someone. I'm simply asking what that basis is."Rebecca stepped so close that only inches separated their faces."Listen carefully, mister. I don't know who you think you are, but around here, I make the rules."Daniel looked directly into her eyes."Then perhaps you should know the rules better."Rebecca reached for the handcuffs attached to her belt. And that was when everything began to change.Rebecca Hayes had been a police officer for eleven years.During that time, she had developed a dangerous belief: anyone who questioned her authority was automatically guilty of something. Her supervisors had received complaints before.Passengers accused her of unnecessary searches, intimidation, and humiliating people in public. But most complaints disappeared into administrative paperwork.Rebecca knew how the system worked. And she knew how to protect herself. At least, she thought she did."Turn around," she ordered Daniel.Daniel remained calm."Am I under arrest?""You're about to be.""For what offense?"Rebecca leaned forward."Obstruction."Daniel raised an eyebrow.
