THE BADGE IN THE DUST

Chapter I: The Rusty Truck on the Highway Shoulder

The late afternoon sun cast a harsh, golden glare across the empty asphalt of County Route 14. Parked along the gravel shoulder was an old, rusted brown pickup truck, its faded paint peeling from years under the open sky.

Standing beside the driver's side door was Officer Miller, a young, smug patrolman in a crisp navy uniform and shoulder patches, holding open a worn brown leather credential case he had snatched from the driver.

Inside the leather folio gleamed a solid gold law enforcement star emblem.

Miller chuckled with open mockery, tilting the gold shield toward his partner, Officer Boggs, who stood leaning arrogantly near their patrol cruiser with arms folded.

"Whose badge is this, old man?" Miller asked, his voice dripping with condescension.

Standing beside the truck was Frank. Dressed in a faded denim jacket, a dusty flannel shirt, and scuffed work boots, Frank's face was etched with hard-earned wrinkles and quiet dignity.

"Mine," Frank replied softly, his steady voice cutting through the distant highway wind.
