Sarah's phone remained frozen in the air.
Maya released Chloe's wrist immediately.
She stepped backward.
Both palms open.
"I'm done."
Chloe stared at her.
Her face was bright red.
"What did you do?"
"I stopped you."
"You attacked me!"
"No."
Maya's voice remained calm.
"You grabbed me."
Chloe scrambled upright.
Sarah suddenly charged forward.
"You're going to pay for that!"
She swung her arm wildly.
Maya ducked.
The movement was effortless.
She stepped outside the line of attack, caught Sarah's arm, turned her, and released her before she could fall.
Sarah stumbled into the lockers.
Maya stepped away.
"Stop."
She wasn't angry.
That was what frightened everyone.
She wasn't breathing heavily.
She wasn't shaking.
She wasn't screaming.
She simply stood there.
Calm.
Balanced.
Ready.
Someone in the crowd whispered:
"What the hell?"
Another voice answered:

Maya looked toward the end of the hallway.
Teachers were finally approaching.
She picked up the biology book she had dropped.

She walked over.

Maya stared at the bin.

Retrieved the keychain.
Wiped the dust away.
And put it into her pocket.

At first, the comments sided with Chloe.
Until people watched the footage.
Then watched it again.
Then slowed it down.

Maya hadn't attacked Chloe.
She hadn't punched her.
She hadn't kicked her.
She hadn't even struck her.
She had defended herself.
And she had stopped the moment the threat ended.
But Chloe didn't care.
She was furious.
She marched into the disciplinary office demanding Maya be suspended.
"She assaulted me."
Mr. Henderson, the head of discipline, watched the video twice.
Then he looked at Chloe.
"You want me to suspend her?"
"Yes."
"For defending herself?"
"She threw me to the ground!"
"After you grabbed her."
Chloe's mouth fell open.
"You don't understand."
"I understand exactly what happened."
She pointed at Maya.

Mr. Henderson's expression hardened.
