Maya said nothing.
He leaned back.
"My daughter tells me you've caused quite a disturbance."
Maya looked at Chloe.
"Your daughter started it."
Mr. Whitmore's expression hardened.
"Be careful."
Maya's hands tightened.
The principal interrupted.
"Mr. Whitmore, this meeting is about student conduct, not influence."
He frowned.
Then turned back toward Maya.
"You should understand something."
Maya waited.
"People like my daughter make mistakes."
He paused.
"They deserve second chances."
Maya nodded.
"I agree."
"Good."
"But that applies to everyone."
The room became quiet.
Mr. Whitmore stared at her.
Maya continued.
"My father deserves second chances too."
"What does your father have to do with this?"
"Nothing."
She looked directly at him.
"That's the point."
Mr. Whitmore didn't understand.
Maya did.
She finally realized something.
She had spent the entire week defending herself.
But she didn't need to.
The truth was already doing it for her.
She stood.
"Am I free to leave?"
The principal nodded.
Maya walked out.
As she entered the hallway, she heard applause.
She stopped.
Students were standing there.
Not hundreds.
Maybe twenty.
Then thirty.
Then more.
Nobody had organized it.
Nobody had planned it.
They were simply there.
Daniel smiled.
Someone called:
"Go, Maya!"
Maya looked embarrassed.
Then laughed.
For the first time all week, she genuinely laughed.
But there was one person who wasn't clapping.
Chloe.
She stood at the far end of the hallway.
Watching.
And for the first time, Maya saw something different in her face.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Fear.
Maya walked toward her.
Chloe stepped backward.
Maya stopped several feet away.
"I don't hate you."
Chloe looked surprised.
"Then why are you doing this?"
"Doing what?"
"Making everyone turn against me."
Maya shook her head.
"I'm not."
"But you could."
"That's the difference."
Chloe didn't understand.
Maya pointed toward the phones.
"The video did this."
Then toward herself.
"I didn't."
Chloe looked down.
Maya continued.
"You thought being powerful meant making everyone afraid of you."
She paused.
"It doesn't."
Chloe swallowed.
"What does it mean?"
Maya looked at her.
"Being powerful means you don't need everyone to be afraid."
Chloe said nothing.
Maya walked away.
And that should have been the end.
But it wasn't.
