Once.
Twice.
Ten times.
She ignored it.
Until Adrian noticed.
"Check it."
Maya picked it up.
Her eyes widened.
There was a new video.
Not from Sarah.
Not from Chloe.
From the school's official social media account.
The caption read:
STUDENT SAFETY INCIDENT — OFFICIAL STATEMENT.
Maya opened it.
The principal was standing in front of the camera.
"We have reviewed the hallway incident involving several students earlier this week."
Maya's heart began pounding.
The principal continued.
"The footage confirms that Maya Carter was subjected to repeated harassment and an attempted physical assault."
Maya stared at the screen.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
"We regret that the initial narrative surrounding this incident unfairly characterized Ms. Carter."
Adrian smiled.
Maya didn't.
She kept watching.
"The school has initiated disciplinary action against the students involved."
The video ended.
Maya lowered the phone.
She should have felt victorious.
Instead, she felt tired.
"Are you okay?" Adrian asked.
Maya nodded.
"Yeah."
But she wasn't.
Because the announcement had done something unexpected.
It made people curious.
Who was Maya Carter?
Where had she trained?
Why was she so good?
And eventually, someone found the answer.
A local amateur fight tournament.
Three years earlier.
A twelve-year-old girl wearing red gloves.
Her name was Maya Carter.
She had won six matches.
Not by knockout.
By technical control.
The video resurfaced.
Then another.
And another.
People realized Maya hadn't suddenly learned to fight.
She had been training for years.
But the biggest surprise came from an old interview.
Maya had been asked why she started martial arts.
Her answer was only a few seconds long.
"My dad."
The interviewer asked why.
Maya smiled.
"Because he works at night, and I wanted to learn how to protect myself when he's not there."
That clip spread faster than anything else.
The girl everyone mocked for having a janitor father had spent years training because she loved and respected him.
The story changed again.
Now students weren't laughing.
They were apologizing.
Some came directly to Maya.
Others sent messages.
One girl wrote:
I saw what happened and I should have said something.
Another:
I'm sorry I laughed.
Another:
You didn't deserve any of that.
Maya read them.
Then turned her phone off.
She wasn't interested in becoming popular.
She didn't want revenge.
She just wanted to go back to being herself.
But Chloe had one final card.
Her father.
That Monday morning, Maya was called into the principal's office.
When she entered, she saw Chloe sitting beside her father.
Mr. Whitmore.
A powerful man.
Expensive suit.
Cold eyes.
He didn't introduce himself.
He didn't need to.
Maya knew exactly who he was.
He looked at her.
"So you're Maya."
"Yes."
"I've heard a lot about you."
