THE WALLET ON MAIN STREET
Chapter I: The Sidewalk Shakedown
The midday sun beat down over the quiet storefronts of Main Street, casting harsh shadows across the concrete sidewalk outside the local branch bank. Idling along the curb was a marked county police cruiser with its roof lightbar strobing a slow, low-intensity pulse.
Standing on the walkway, cornered against the brick facade, was Donald. Dressed in a weathered brown work jacket and dark trousers, Donald closed his eyes for a brief second in quiet, dignified restraint.
Reaching aggressively into Donald’s jacket pocket was Officer Miller, a burly patrolman wearing a heavy black police jacket and duty belt. Miller forcefully yanked out a worn brown leather tri-fold wallet, flipping it open with practiced greed.
Inside were multiple credit cards, identification documents, and a thick fold of cash.
Donald opened his eyes, leveling a steady, unyielding gaze at the officer.
"Give it back, son," Donald said in a calm, gravelly voice.
