Ryan laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“You think hitting some little steel plate makes you special?”

“No.”

“Then what are you proving?”

“Nothing.”

That answer unsettled him.

Ryan wanted resistance.

Resistance could be corrected.

He wanted arrogance.

Arrogance could be exposed.

He wanted Emma emotional.

Emotion would justify everything he had already decided about her.

Instead, she looked almost disappointed.

Not in herself.

In him.

Ryan recognized the expression.

He hated it immediately.

He turned toward the trainees.

“Everybody watching?”

Nobody answered.

Ryan raised his voice.

“This is what happens when someone walks into our environment and confuses confidence with competence.”

Emma kept her attention downrange.

Ryan paced behind her.

“Anybody can get lucky once.”

He raised one finger.

“Maybe twice.”

Several trainees shifted.

Ryan pointed toward the distant plate.

“Three hits don’t change standards.”

Daniel’s gaze remained fixed on him.

“Standards matter because discipline matters,” Ryan continued.

Emma spoke quietly.

“Agreed.”

Ryan stopped.

“I wasn’t asking you.”

Emma faced forward again.

He took a slow breath.

“You have two rounds remaining.”

“I know.”

“Now you will use the assigned silhouette.”

Emma turned her head.

“Is that an order?”

Several men looked toward her.

Ryan’s face tightened.

He stepped close enough for his shadow to cross her boots.

“Yes.”

Emma nodded once.

“Yes, Master Chief.”

Ryan backed away.

His smile returned.

It was smaller now.

The confidence behind it had changed.

Emma raised the rifle.

The paper silhouette stood motionless beneath the bright sun.

The wind continued shifting.

She waited.

Ryan watched her shoulder.

One second passed.

Then another.

“What are you waiting for?” he asked.

“A clean condition.”

Ryan scoffed.

“It’s paper.”

Emma did not answer.

The flag nearest Lane Three relaxed.

Emma fired.

The paper target jumped slightly in its frame.

She reset without lowering the rifle.

A second report followed.

Then silence returned.

Ryan looked toward the target.

The distance prevented him from seeing the impacts clearly.

He glanced toward the spotting scope near Daniel.

Daniel did not move.

Ryan called toward an instructor.

“Check it.”

The instructor raised binoculars.

He remained still for several seconds.

Ryan waited.

“Well?”

The instructor lowered them.

“Both center.”

Ryan’s jaw flexed.

“Center where?”

The instructor hesitated.

“Same group.”

A few trainees exchanged looks.

Ryan’s head turned.

“What does that mean?”

The instructor raised the binoculars again.

“Close enough to look like one impact from here.”

The silence returned stronger than before.

Emma lowered the rifle.

She engaged the safety.

She removed the magazine.

She cleared the chamber.

Then she held the rifle with the action visible.

“Five rounds complete,” she said.

Ryan looked at her.

Nothing in her expression asked for approval.

That irritated him most.

“You’re finished when I say you’re finished.”

Emma waited.

Daniel’s eyes shifted toward Ryan.

Ryan noticed.

He turned slightly.

“Problem, Commander?”

Daniel answered without emotion.

“Continue.”

Ryan seemed relieved.

The single word sounded like support.

He did not notice the trainees reacting differently.

Several had begun avoiding his eyes.

The joke had become uncomfortable.

Ryan turned back toward Emma.

“You got experience.”

“Yes.”

“That doesn’t make you qualified here.”

“I didn’t say it did.”

“You keep giving answers nobody asked for.”

Emma’s eyes stayed on him.

“You keep asking questions.”

A trainee near the rear looked away quickly.

Ryan heard the suppressed reaction.

His face hardened.

“Clear Lane Three.”

Emma stepped back.

She placed the rifle carefully on the designated table.

Ryan followed.

“Let me explain something.”

Emma turned.

He stopped beside the table.

“This range isn’t a place where outsiders walk in and improvise.”

“I understand.”

“No, I don’t think you do.”

Emma waited.

Ryan pointed toward the trainees.

“These men earned their place here.”

Nobody moved.

“They follow structure.”

Emma glanced briefly toward them.

Then she looked back at Ryan.

“So did I.”

Ryan laughed again.

“You arrived without identifying yourself.”

“Yes.”

“You let everyone wonder who you were.”

“Yes.”

“You stood there while I gave you a chance.”

Emma’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“A chance?”

Ryan spread his hands.

“You wanted to shoot.”

Emma said nothing.

He continued.

“I could have sent you away.”

“You could have.”

“But I didn’t.”

“No.”

“I let you demonstrate what you could do.”

Emma looked toward Daniel.

Only for a moment.

Ryan noticed.

That brief glance struck him like a warning he could not interpret.

He turned toward the commander.

“You brought her here.”

Daniel nodded.

“I did.”

Ryan waited.

Daniel offered nothing else.

Ryan looked back at Emma.

“Administrative support?”

Daniel did not answer.

Ryan smiled again.

The silence seemed to reassure him.

“Exactly.”

Emma’s gaze returned to Daniel.

He remained still.

Ryan mistook restraint for agreement.

He stepped closer to Emma.

“Skill with a rifle is useful.”

Emma waited.

“But context matters.”

“Yes.”

“You don’t walk into specialized environments and pretend one talent changes hierarchy.”

“I didn’t pretend anything.”

“There it is again.”

“What?”

“That tone.”

Emma’s expression remained controlled.

“What tone?”

Ryan stared at her.

The question was sincere.

That made him look increasingly unreasonable.

One instructor shifted his weight near the firing line.

Ryan saw him.

“You have something to add?”

“No, Master Chief.”

Ryan turned back.

“You see what happens?”

Emma said nothing.

“They’re distracted now.”

“By me?”

“By this.”

Ryan gestured between them.

Emma looked at his hand.

“You started this.”

The words were quiet.

The entire group heard them.

Ryan’s face changed.

“Excuse me?”

“You handed me the rifle.”

Ryan stepped forward.

Emma did not retreat.

“You challenged me publicly.”

Ryan’s mouth tightened.

“You encouraged them to treat me like entertainment.”
