Emma remained still.

“I encouraged you to make them too.”

A trainee looked toward him.

Ryan continued.

“That was on me.”

His voice was quieter than before.

He looked toward Emma.

“I treated you like you needed to earn basic respect.”

Emma held his gaze.

Ryan took another breath.

“You didn’t.”

The range stayed silent.

“I also made the situation worse when you outshot my expectations.”

Emma said nothing.

Ryan looked toward the distant steel.

“I turned being wrong into a contest.”

Daniel’s expression softened almost invisibly.

Ryan faced Emma again.

“I apologize.”

Emma waited.

The pause made several trainees uncomfortable.

Ryan did not look away.

Finally, Emma nodded.

“I accept the apology.”

His shoulders loosened slightly.

Then she continued.

“It does not remove the evaluation.”

The tension returned.

Ryan nodded.

“I understand.”

“Good.”

She looked toward the trainees.

“It also doesn’t remove their responsibility.”

Several men straightened.

Emma addressed them directly.

“You had choices too.”

Nobody spoke.

“You didn’t create the situation.”

She glanced toward Ryan.

“But some of you helped it grow.”

The trainee who had hidden his grin earlier raised his hand slightly.

Emma looked toward him.

“Yes?”

He swallowed.

“I should have kept my mouth shut.”

Emma considered him.

“That is not the lesson.”

He looked confused.

She continued.

“The lesson is not silence.”

Daniel watched her carefully.

“The lesson is judgment.”

The trainee nodded slowly.

Emma looked across the group.

“You should know when humor builds a team.”

She paused.

“And you should know when humor turns someone into a target.”

Nobody moved.

“That distinction matters.”

“Yes, ma’am,” several men answered.

Ryan looked toward Emma.

“You want them dismissed?”

“Not yet.”

She glanced toward Lane Three.

“Reset the line.”

Ryan blinked.

“You want to continue training?”

“Yes.”

“After this?”

Emma looked at him.

“That is what the range is for.”

For the first time, something almost resembling relief crossed Ryan’s face.

He turned toward the trainees.

“You heard her.”

Then he stopped.

His jaw shifted.

He corrected himself.

“You heard the evaluator.”

Emma’s expression remained neutral.

Ryan looked toward her.

“Permission to resume?”

Emma answered immediately.

“This is still your range evolution.”

The words surprised him.

She continued.

“Run it.”

Ryan stood still.

The authority she returned carried more weight than the authority she could have taken.

He nodded.

“Yes, ma’am.”

He faced the trainees.

“Shooter assignments.”

The group began moving.

Rifles were checked.

Magazines were prepared.

Instructors returned to their positions.

The atmosphere had changed.

Nobody looked frightened.

Nobody looked amused either.

The energy was sharper.

More thoughtful.

Ryan walked toward the first lane.

He stopped beside a younger trainee adjusting his sling.

Normally, he might have barked the correction.

Instead, he pointed.

“Check that attachment.”

The trainee looked down.

“Yes, Master Chief.”

Ryan waited.

The trainee corrected it.

Ryan nodded.

“Better.”

Emma watched from beside Daniel.

Daniel leaned closer.

“You planned the steel?”

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“I thought so.”

“The opportunity presented itself.”

“That sounds like you.”

Emma glanced toward him.

“You stayed quiet.”

“You asked me to.”

“Yes.”

Daniel watched Ryan moving along the line.

“I nearly stepped in twice.”

Emma looked toward him.

“When?”

“When he warned you about recoil.”

She raised one eyebrow.

Daniel continued.

“And when he called you administrative support.”

Emma almost smiled.

“Why didn’t you?”

“You told me the evaluation needed to be honest.”

“It did.”

Daniel nodded toward Ryan.

“You got honest.”

Emma watched the Master Chief correct another trainee.

“Yes.”

Daniel studied her.

“Too honest?”

Emma took a moment.

“No.”

The answer carried no satisfaction.

Daniel heard that.

“You feel bad for him.”

Emma looked toward the firing line.

“I don’t enjoy watching experienced people discover their blind spots publicly.”

Daniel nodded.

“But?”

“But people under them usually discover those blind spots privately.”

Daniel’s expression turned thoughtful.

Emma continued.

“That can be worse.”

Ryan called the line ready.

The trainees settled into position.

His voice sounded different.

Still authoritative.

Still clear.

But the performative edge had disappeared.

Emma watched him scan each lane.

“Line is hot.”

The shooters raised their rifles.

Ryan moved behind them.

A trainee on Lane Five adjusted his stance.

Ryan started toward him.

Then he stopped.

“Lane Five.”

The trainee looked back.

“Master Chief?”

“Your left heel is drifting.”

The trainee adjusted.

Ryan nodded.

“Good.”

Emma noticed Daniel glancing at her.

“What?” she asked.

“Nothing.”

“That wasn’t nothing.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“You were right to come.”

Emma watched Ryan.

“I haven’t written anything yet.”

“You know what you saw.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

She considered the question.

“People are rarely only their worst hour.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“That sounds promising.”

“It isn’t a promise.”

“I know.”

The first volley cracked across the range.

Targets shook.

Brass struck gravel.

Ryan moved behind the shooters.

This time he praised a clean correction.

He asked another trainee what caused a miss.

He listened to the answer.

Emma noticed.

So did Daniel.

The second volley followed.

Ryan stopped beside Lane Two.

The shooter lowered his rifle safely.

“Master Chief, can I say something?”

Ryan looked at him.

“Go ahead.”

The trainee hesitated.

Emma recognized him.

He had been among the first to grin at her.

“I thought she was going to mess up.”

Ryan glanced toward Emma.

Then back.

“So did I.”

The trainee shifted.

“I laughed because you did.”

Ryan’s face tightened.

The young man continued carefully.
