Several trainees looked down.

“And now,” Emma continued, “you’re blaming me because the demonstration didn’t go the way you expected.”

Ryan stared at her.

Nobody breathed loudly.

Daniel’s expression remained controlled.

The bright range suddenly felt smaller.

Ryan lowered his voice.

“You should think carefully before accusing me of anything.”

Emma held his gaze.

“I described what happened.”

“You’re a visitor.”

“Yes.”

“You’re on my range.”

Emma glanced toward Daniel.

Then back.

“Is it?”

Ryan almost smiled.

“There’s no question about that.”

Daniel shifted beside the safety table.

It was a small movement.

Emma saw it.

Ryan did not.

He continued.

“You came here with no insignia and no explanation.”

“That’s true.”

“You expected people to guess?”

“No.”

“Then what did you expect?”

Emma considered him.

“Professional behavior.”

Nobody moved.

Ryan blinked once.

The answer had landed cleanly.

He folded his arms.

“You’re saying I behaved unprofessionally?”

Emma did not answer immediately.

Ryan took her silence as hesitation.

His confidence returned.

“Go ahead.”

Emma looked toward the firing line.

The trainees were watching.

She turned back to him.

“You mocked someone you believed had less authority than you.”

Ryan’s face hardened.

“You encouraged others to do the same.”

A trainee swallowed visibly.

“You assigned competence before seeing evidence.”

Ryan’s arms unfolded.

“And when the evidence contradicted your assumption, you treated correction like disrespect.”

Ryan stepped closer.

“Enough.”

Emma stopped.

Her expression remained calm.

Daniel finally moved away from the safety table.

He took two steps toward them.

Ryan looked relieved.

“Commander, I think we’re done here.”

Daniel stopped.

“No.”

The single word changed the air.

Ryan’s expression shifted.

Daniel looked toward Emma.

“Are you finished with the firing portion?”

“Yes.”

“Any safety concerns?”

“No.”

“Equipment concerns?”

“No.”

Daniel nodded.

Ryan looked between them.

“What exactly is happening?”

Neither answered immediately.

That silence felt different from the earlier silence.

Before, Ryan had controlled the room.

Now the room seemed to be waiting for something beyond him.

He looked toward the trainees.

Their attention had moved to Daniel.

Ryan’s mouth tightened.

“Commander?”

Daniel studied him.

“Why did you assume she worked in administration?”

Ryan blinked.

“What?”

“You said administrative support.”

Ryan looked toward Emma.

Then back.

“She didn’t identify a unit.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Ryan’s posture changed slightly.

“She arrived with you.”

“Yes.”

“I assumed she was attached to your staff.”

“Why?”

Ryan hesitated.

Emma watched him without satisfaction.

That bothered him.

He wanted triumph in her face.

He wanted some sign that this had been planned as revenge.

There was none.

Ryan gestured toward her clothing.

“She had no rank displayed.”

Daniel nodded.

“And?”

Ryan frowned.

“And she didn’t identify herself.”

“She gave you her name.”

“That’s not what I mean.”

“I know.”

Daniel’s tone remained neutral.

That neutrality was becoming unbearable.

Ryan glanced toward the instructors.

Neither looked at him.

He lowered his voice.

“If there’s something I should know, say it.”

Daniel held his gaze.

“There was.”

Ryan waited.

Daniel did not continue.

“What?”

“There was something you should have known.”

Ryan looked at Emma.

She remained still beside the weapons table.

“What?”

Daniel answered quietly.

“How you treat people shouldn’t depend on what you know about their rank.”

Nobody moved.

Ryan’s face became unreadable.

He gave a short laugh.

“So this was some kind of lesson?”

Daniel did not answer.

Ryan looked toward Emma.

“You came here to test me?”

Emma’s expression changed slightly.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Ryan saw it.

His breathing slowed.

The pieces began arranging themselves.

Daniel had brought her personally.

Daniel had stayed quiet.

Daniel had watched her weapon handling.

Daniel had watched Ryan more closely after the third shot.

Emma had never asked permission to be respected.

She had never defended her presence.

She had never offered credentials.

She had simply observed.

Ryan looked at Daniel again.

“What is her position?”

Daniel did not answer immediately.

Ryan’s voice became sharper.

“Commander.”

Emma spoke.

“Let him finish.”

Ryan turned toward her.

Something in her tone stopped him.

It was not loud.

It was not threatening.

It carried the calm certainty of someone accustomed to being heard without demanding attention.

Daniel stepped beside her.

The movement was subtle.

Yet every trainee saw it.

He was no longer standing between Ryan and a visitor.

He was standing beside Emma.

Ryan’s expression tightened.

Daniel looked toward the trainees.

“Secure your weapons and remain on line.”

The group responded immediately.

“Yes, sir.”

Magazines were removed.

Actions opened.

Rifles were placed safely.

The sounds came quickly and precisely.

Ryan watched them.

For the first time that afternoon, nobody looked toward him for direction.

Daniel waited until the line was secure.

Then he faced Ryan.

“Emma Carter is a senior weapons evaluator.”

Ryan said nothing.

The words seemed to remove every sound from the range.

Daniel continued.

“She was brought here by me personally.”

Ryan’s eyes moved toward Emma.

“She came to assess range leadership.”

Nobody shifted.

Daniel’s voice stayed even.

“I deliberately withheld her status.”

Ryan swallowed.

Daniel held his gaze.

“I wanted to see how you treated someone you believed had no authority.”

The truth settled across the firing line.

It explained everything.

Emma’s lack of insignia.

Daniel’s silence.

Her refusal to announce a unit.

Her calm answers.

His close observation.

Ryan’s irritation each time Daniel watched her.

The entire afternoon changed meaning at once.

Ryan looked toward the trainees.

Several stared straight ahead.

Nobody smiled now.

His public challenge no longer looked like instruction.

It looked like evidence.

Ryan’s first joke had been evidence.

His warnings had been evidence.

The laughter he encouraged had been evidence.

His reaction after Emma succeeded had been evidence.

Even his lecture about standards had become evidence.

Ryan turned toward Daniel.

“You set me up.”

Daniel’s expression remained steady.

“No.”

Ryan looked almost offended.

“You withheld critical information.”

“Yes.”

“You knew how this would look.”

“I knew I needed an honest observation.”

Ryan shook his head.

“So you wanted me to fail.”
