That was all she said.

Chapter 10 — What Came After

A year later, Westbridge Middle School looked different.

There were independent complaint channels.

Security footage could no longer be deleted by school administrators.

Parents received written responses to bullying reports.

Students could report incidents anonymously.

And every complaint was reviewed by someone outside the school.

Mia's wrist had healed.

She still had a faint scar on her shoulder.

But she no longer hid it.

One afternoon, she asked Nora:

"Do you think things really changed?"

Nora looked at the school across the street.

"Not completely."

"Then what's the point?"

"The point is that people are watching now."

Mia smiled.

"That's not a very happy answer."

Nora laughed.

"No."

She squeezed her daughter's hand.

"But it's a realistic one."

Mia looked toward the school.

Then she said:

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"I'm glad you believed me."

Nora stopped walking.

She looked at her daughter.

"I didn't just believe you."

She hugged her tightly.

"I listened."

And years later, Nora would realize that those two words had been the beginning of everything.

Because children don't always need adults to fight their battles for them.

Sometimes they need an adult willing to stop, listen, and say:

"I believe you. Now let's find out what really happened."
