NO RECORDING AVAILABLE.

She stared at the message.

That didn't make sense.

The school had cameras everywhere.

Then her phone rang.

It was Mia.

"Mom?"

"I'm here."

"Did you find out who it was?"

"Caleb."

Mia became silent.

"You know him?"

"Everybody knows him."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because he said his dad could get teachers fired."

Nora closed her eyes.

"Did he hurt anyone else?"

Another silence.

"Yes."

"How many?"

"I don't know."

That answer frightened Nora more than anything else.

She spent the afternoon talking to parents.

One child had been shoved into a bathroom wall.

Another had lost two front teeth during a "game."

A third had stopped eating lunch at school.

Every parent had complained.

Every complaint had ended the same way.

There wasn't enough evidence.

Nora opened a notebook.

She wrote one sentence across the first page:

Find the evidence.

She found an elderly janitor named Walter cleaning the hallway.

"You were working yesterday afternoon?"

Walter nodded.
