THE WELCOME HOME PERMIT

Chapter I: The Canvas Truck and the Green Lawn

The midday sun beat down warmly on the quiet cul-de-sac of Willow Creek, a pristine suburban development where every lawn was edged to surgical precision and two-car garages hid any hint of human clutter.

At the end of the paved driveway of Lot 14 sat a heavy-duty, olive-drab tactical cargo truck with a high canvas canopy. Behind it, stacks of brown cardboard moving boxes rested on the concrete.

Carrying a heavy box toward the open front door was Captain Elena Rivera.

Elena wore her full Army Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) uniform, her combat boots dusted from travel, and her dark hair pulled back into a regulation low bun. She had just touched down from a fourteen-month overseas deployment. Her muscles ached, but the relief of stepping onto domestic soil after months of sandstorms and high-stress missions was the only thing on her mind.

Beside the tailgate stood her husband, Mark, wearing a casual maroon t-shirt and jeans, lifting another container down to the pavement.

"Almost done, honey," Mark called out with a warm smile. "Just three more crates from base storage and we can unpack the kitchen."

Elena smiled back, her eyes looking at the welcoming porch of their new home.
