That peace lasted exactly forty seconds.
Chapter II: The Gatekeeper in Pink
"Stop right there!"
A shrill, piercing voice echoed across the neighborhood. Marching across the manicured lawn with aggressive, stomping strides was Clara Higgins—the self-appointed block captain and vice president of the Willow Creek HOA.
Clara was dressed in a vivid hot-pink tunic and matching pastel trousers, clutching a gold smartphone in one hand while stabbing the air with the other.
"Put that down right now!" Clara shrieked, positioning herself directly on the porch walkway, blocking Elena’s path to her own front door. "I am calling the police!"
Elena stopped in her tracks, balancing the heavy cardboard box against her chest. Her calm, trained demeanor remained completely intact, though her brow furrowed in confusion.
Mark immediately dropped what he was holding and stepped between Clara and his wife.
"Ma'am, lower your voice," Mark said, holding his hands up. "She just got home from overseas. We're only unloading our household goods."
