Wade’s father.

For thirty years, Judge Hollister had been the most respected man in Oak Hollow. He chaired veterans’ charities, spoke at graduations, and had personally sworn Wade into office. **He was also the architect of the network his son believed he controlled.**

The elder Hollister had converted small-town corruption into a machine. Wade supplied fear. The judge supplied court orders. Developers bought seized land cheaply, banks financed the purchases, and officials divided the profit.

Samuel stared at Wade. “You weren’t the king.” Wade’s eyes stayed fixed on his father’s name. Samuel finished quietly, **“You were the guard dog.”**

For the first time, Wade looked genuinely broken.

Then Mercer turned to Ruby.

“There is one more thing you need to know.”

Chapter 6

Federal accountants had traced the earliest foundation transfers back twelve years, two years before Wade became sheriff. The first hidden payment was not made by Judge Hollister. It came from an account belonging to Wade himself.

Everyone looked toward him.

Wade whispered, “That’s impossible.” Mercer placed an old bank document on the table. The signature was unquestionably Wade’s, but the account had been opened when Wade was still a deputy earning barely forty thousand dollars a year.

The deposit was $250,000.

Wade stared at his father’s name beside the transfer authorization and finally understood. Judge Hollister had opened the account using his son’s identity, moved dirty money through it, and then spent years pushing Wade toward the sheriff’s office.

His career had not been a reward.

**It had been insurance.**

If the network ever collapsed, every major financial trail pointed first toward Sheriff Wade Hollister. His father had built the entire system so that the son who terrified Oak Hollow would eventually take the fall for the father who designed it.

Wade sat down slowly.

All the swagger drained from him.

Ruby watched the realization settle into his face. “You spent ten years making everyone else afraid of losing everything,” she said. “And you never noticed your own father had already decided what you were worth.”

Judge Hollister was arrested before noon while leaving the county courthouse. Wade eventually cooperated, not because he became honorable, but because rage toward his father proved stronger than loyalty. His testimony helped convict eleven members of the network.
