"I failed to see what was happening in my absence."
Then he looked at Marcus.
"You are talented. That is precisely why your failure is serious."
Marcus expected anger.
Tanaka gave him responsibility.
"You will step away from teaching until you understand what your belt represents."
Marcus looked toward the door.
Elias stood outside.
Tanaka recognized him.
"Elias?"
Marcus turned sharply.
The stranger smiled.
"You know him?"
Tanaka nodded.
"We trained together many years ago."
The room went silent again.
Chapter 10 — The Quiet Stranger's Past
Marcus stared at Elias.
Tanaka explained that Elias had once been one of his most gifted students.
He had competed internationally, taught instructors, and eventually left competitive fighting after seeing too many talented people confuse violence with strength.
"I thought you stopped training," Tanaka said.
"I stopped chasing trophies."
Elias smiled.
"I never stopped learning."
Marcus lowered his gaze.
"Why didn't you tell me who you were?"
"Because it shouldn't matter."
Marcus looked confused.
Elias continued.
"If you only respect someone after learning their résumé, you aren't respecting the person. You're respecting status."
Tanaka nodded.
The dojo became quiet.
Marcus finally spoke.
