She turned with the pull, freed the strap, and stepped sideways.

Tyler’s own momentum carried him forward.

He stumbled.

Caught the wall.

Nothing dramatic.

But now everyone knew she was not frozen.

Tyler looked at her differently.

“What the hell?”

Ava backed toward the athletic office.

“Stay away from me.”

Tyler’s pride took over.

He stepped toward her again.

Jason moved between them.

“Enough.”

Tyler shoved him aside.

Then reached toward Ava.

She raised both hands.

“Stop.”

He kept coming.

Ava shifted.

Tyler grabbed for her arm.

She removed it.

He tried again.

She moved away.

Every action had one purpose.

Create space.

Reach adults.

Leave.

Tyler became frustrated.

“You think you can fight me?”

Ava shook her head.

That answer confused him.

Then she added:

“I think you should stop.”

He laughed.

“You scared?”

The hallway went quiet.

Ava continued:

“You’re bigger than me.”

“You’re angry.”

“And you keep touching people after they tell you to stop.”

“I’d be stupid not to be scared.”

Tyler stared.

Fear was supposed to sound weak.

Ava made it sound like information.

“She’s right.”

Tyler turned.

“Shut up.”

Then the athletic office door opened.

Coach Daniel Morris stepped out.

Forty-eight.

Former Marine.

Twenty years coaching football and wrestling.

He looked first at Tyler.

Then Ava.

Then her backpack on the floor.

Tyler immediately answered:

“He pushed me twice and grabbed my bag.”

Coach Morris looked toward Jason and Connor.

Jason nodded.

Connor looked down.

Morris’s expression changed.

“She’s exaggerating.”

Morris pointed toward the wall.

“There’s a camera.”

Tyler froze.

He looked up.

Small black security camera.

Right corner.

Visible.

He had walked beneath it hundreds of times.

Never noticed.

Coach Morris turned toward Ava.

“Are you hurt?”

“Did you fall?”

“Did he hit you?”

“Did you hit him?”
