Tyler interrupted:

“She did some move on me.”

“I moved when you pulled my backpack.”

“You tripped.”

Coach Morris looked at Jason.

“That’s what happened.”

Morris said:

“Everyone stays here.”

Then he called the assistant principal.

Within fifteen minutes, the hallway had become an investigation.

Not a courtroom.

Not a viral revenge scene.

A school investigation.

Administrator.

School resource officer.

Statements.

Camera footage.

Parents contacted.

Ava’s mother arrived wearing navy scrubs beneath a winter coat.

She had come directly from the hospital.

Renee Carter moved quickly down the hall.

“Ava?”

“I’m okay.”

Renee hugged her.

Then pulled back.

“Where did he touch you?”

“Shoulder.”

“Twice?”

“Anything hurt?”

Renee looked at Coach Morris.

He explained what they knew.

Then said:

“We’re preserving the video.”

Renee nodded.

“Good.”

Tyler’s father arrived twenty minutes later.

Greg Grant was a local contractor.

Large man.

Work jacket.

Red face.

He looked at his son first.

Then at the administrators.

“What’s going on?”

Tyler said:

“She made it into a whole thing.”

Renee heard.

She did not raise her voice.

She turned.

“Your son put his hands on my daughter after she told him not to.”

Greg looked toward Ava.

Then Tyler.

“Is that true?”

Tyler shrugged.

“I barely pushed her.”

Greg’s face changed.

Renee said:

“That sentence is not helping.”

Greg looked at Tyler again.

“Did she tell you to stop?”

Tyler looked down.

“And you pushed her again?”

Silence.

Greg’s anger shifted.

Not toward Ava.

Toward his son.

“What were you thinking?”

Tyler muttered:

“She always acts like she’s too good to talk to anyone.”

Greg stared.

“So you touched her?”

Tyler said nothing.

The security footage settled most of the factual dispute.

Ava standing.

Tyler blocking.

First shove.

Clear.

Second shove.
