Bag grab.

Ava’s defensive movement.

Tyler advancing again.

Jason intervening.

Coach Morris exiting.

No movie fight.

No secret beating.

No ambiguity about who kept escalating.

School discipline followed policy.

Tyler was suspended.

Removed from two upcoming football games.

Required to participate in a behavioral review before returning to team activities.

Some students thought the punishment was too harsh.

Others thought it was too soft.

Renee told Ava:

“That argument is for the school.”

Ava sat at the kitchen table.

“You’re not mad?”

“I’m furious.”

“You don’t look furious.”

“I work in an emergency room.”

“I have efficient anger.”

Ava smiled slightly.

Then looked down.

“I should’ve told you earlier.”

Renee became quiet.

“How long?”

“A few weeks.”

The smile disappeared.

“What was he doing?”

Ava told her.

The jokes.

Blocking doors.

Moving the chair.

Calling her Mouse.

Renee listened.

Then asked:

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I thought it wasn’t serious.”

“Was that true?”

“At first.”

“And later?”

“I thought I could handle it.”

Renee took her daughter’s hand.

“You did handle it.”

Renee continued:

“But handling something doesn’t always mean handling it alone.”

That sentence stayed.

The next Monday, Ava returned to school.

The story had spread.

Of course it had.

Somebody said she had thrown Tyler into a wall.

Someone else said she was a karate champion.

By lunch, another version claimed she had broken his wrist.

Ava stared at Mia.

“His wrist is fine.”

Mia laughed.

“People are saying I beat him up.”

“That’s high school.”

“I didn’t.”

“You want me to correct everybody?”

Mia stood on a cafeteria chair.

Ava grabbed her sleeve.

Mia sat.

“Then live with mythology.”

Ava groaned.

The rumors changed again when somebody discovered Ava trained judo.

Now the headline became:

TYLER PICKED THE WRONG GIRL.

Ava hated that version most.

She told Mia:

“What does that even mean?”

“That he didn’t know you trained.”

“So?”

Mia shrugged.

“That’s the internet logic.”

“He didn’t pick the wrong girl.”
