The message stated that Evelyn had pressured members to approve enforcement actions they had never reviewed.
For the first time, Evelyn looked nervous.
She ended the meeting.
But she didn't stop.
CHAPTER 5 — THE DAY THE POLICE ARRIVED
Six months after we moved in, Evelyn appeared at our house with two board members.
Claire was planting roses.
Evelyn handed her an eviction-style notice.
“This is final.”
Claire read it.
“You don't have the authority to remove an owner from her home.”
Evelyn smiled.
“We'll see.”
The next morning, the cruiser arrived.
That brought us back to the garden.
Officer Reed looked at the association papers.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
“Who issued this order?”
“The board.”
“That's not what I asked.”
Evelyn hesitated.
Officer Reed turned toward Claire.
“Commander, do you want me to document this as a civil dispute?”
“Yes.”
Her voice remained calm.
Evelyn suddenly realized that the police weren't there to enforce her wishes.
They were there to document what she had done.
Officer Reed asked for the association's records.
