"She insults them. Sometimes she threatens their jobs. Yesterday she accused Naomi of stealing jewelry."

"Was anything stolen?"

"No, sir."

Ethan leaned back.

"Why hasn't anyone told me?"

Mrs. Bennett lowered her eyes.

"Because Miss Sterling told them you'd believe her over us."

The words struck him harder than he expected.

After Mrs. Bennett left, Ethan called Marcus Ortiz, the estate's security director.

"I want to review the security recordings from the past two weeks," Ethan said. "Especially the common areas and the incidents reported by the staff."

Marcus hesitated.

"There's something you should see, sir."

The following afternoon, Naomi was arranging flowers in the conservatory when Ethan approached.

"Naomi, do you have a moment?"

"Of course, Mr. Whitmore."

He waited until the other employees had left.

"Why didn't you tell me what Vanessa has been doing?"

Naomi placed a white rose into its vase.

"Would you have believed me?"

Ethan opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

"I'd like to think so."

"That's not an answer."

He looked away.

"No. It isn't."

Naomi continued arranging the flowers.

"I accepted this job because I wanted an ordinary life, Mr. Whitmore. I didn't come here to fight your fiancée."

"She's treated you terribly."

"She's treated everyone terribly."

Ethan studied her.

"How have you remained so calm?"

Naomi considered her answer.

"Anger doesn't make a person stronger. Sometimes it only makes their intentions easier to predict."

It was an unusual response.

Ethan had always noticed Naomi's remarkable composure. Nothing seemed to frighten or surprise her.

"You've done more than housekeeping before, haven't you?"

"Yes."

"What did you do?"

"A little security work."

He smiled faintly.

"Security?"

"Executive protection."

Ethan straightened.

"You're serious."

"Completely."

"Why did you leave?"

Naomi's hands became still.

"Because protecting someone from danger doesn't mean you can protect them from their own choices."

Ethan sensed that the answer concealed a painful story.

He chose not to press further.

Instead, he said, "I'm going to deal with Vanessa."

Naomi turned toward him.

"Then do it because her behavior is wrong. Not because you're embarrassed that someone noticed."

Ethan stared at her.

Few people ever spoke to him so directly.

But she was right.

That evening, Ethan confronted Vanessa in the library.

"I've received complaints about how you've treated the staff."

Vanessa laughed.

"Really? You're bothering me with servants' complaints?"

"They're people, Vanessa."

"Of course they're people. They're people we pay."

"That doesn't give you the right to humiliate them."

Her smile disappeared.

"Has Naomi been talking about me?"

"This isn't about Naomi alone."

"It always comes back to her!"

Vanessa stepped closer.

"I've seen the way you watch that woman."

Ethan looked genuinely confused.

"Watch her?"

"Don't pretend. You defend her. You listen to her. You act as though she's more important than your own fiancée."

"I'm asking you to treat people decently."

"And I'm telling you that I will not be lectured by a maid!"

Ethan's expression hardened.

"Maybe we should reconsider the engagement."

Vanessa froze.

Then her anger transformed into something colder.

"My father has already committed millions to your development project. Investors are coming to our engagement gala. You can't humiliate my family now."

"Business contracts and marriage are separate matters."

"Not to my father."

She moved toward the door.

"If you cancel this wedding, Richard will make sure everyone knows you destroyed our partnership."

Ethan said nothing.

Vanessa interpreted his silence as victory.

Before leaving, she turned.

"And get rid of Naomi. I don't want to see her at the gala."

After Vanessa disappeared, Ethan remained alone in the library.

On his desk lay a report from Marcus Ortiz.

It contained dated incident summaries, witness statements, and protected copies of security recordings from shared areas of the house.

Ethan slowly opened the report.

He watched Vanessa deliberately knock a wineglass onto the carpet.

He watched her hide diamond earrings beneath a chair.

Then he watched Naomi quietly endure insults without once retaliating.

For the first time, Ethan understood the difference between the woman he intended to marry and the woman who cleaned his house.

One demanded respect without earning it.

The other commanded respect without asking for it.

His decision was made.

But the engagement gala was only forty-eight hours away.

And Vanessa Sterling was preparing one final humiliation.

Chapter 4: Three Hundred Witnesses

The night of the engagement gala arrived beneath a cloudless Boston sky.

Whitmore House glowed like a palace.

Hundreds of white roses decorated the grand entrance. Golden lights illuminated the gardens, and a long red carpet stretched from the driveway to the towering front doors.

Inside, the ballroom had been transformed into a glittering world of luxury.

Crystal chandeliers hung above polished marble floors. A string quartet performed classical music while servers carried silver trays filled with champagne.

Three hundred guests filled the mansion.

Politicians mingled with investment bankers. Famous journalists exchanged conversations with television personalities. Wealthy business owners discussed acquisitions while their spouses admired designer gowns and extravagant jewelry.

Near the center of the ballroom stood an enormous five-tier celebration cake decorated with white sugar roses.

The Sterling family had spared no expense.

Vanessa wanted the evening to be remembered as the social event of the year.

She arrived wearing a magnificent magenta evening gown, fitted at the waist and flowing elegantly toward the floor. A diamond necklace sparkled above its neckline, and her blonde hair had been arranged in an elaborate style.

Every camera turned toward her.

"Vanessa! Over here!"

"One more picture!"

"Show us the ring!"

She smiled effortlessly.

This was her world.

A world where beauty, money, and social connections made people important.

Beside her, Ethan Whitmore wore a perfectly tailored black tuxedo.

He looked handsome but distracted.

Vanessa noticed immediately.

"Smile, darling," she whispered through clenched teeth. "People are watching."

Ethan obeyed without enthusiasm.

"What's wrong with you?" she hissed.

"Nothing we should discuss here."

"You've barely spoken to me all evening."

"Then enjoy the party."

Vanessa's smile tightened.

"Is this about that maid again?"

Ethan looked toward the far side of the ballroom.

Naomi Reyes was supervising the service staff.

Her gray uniform was immaculate, her dark hair pulled tightly back. She moved among the guests with quiet precision, noticing everything without drawing attention to herself.

Vanessa followed Ethan's gaze.

Her stomach tightened with jealousy.

"There she is," she muttered.

Ethan turned back.

"Vanessa, don't."

"Don't what?"

"Whatever you're thinking."

Vanessa laughed.

"You're becoming ridiculous."

She walked away before he could respond.
