Naomi exhaled.

Then everything happened in a single fluid movement.

She turned slightly, redirecting Vanessa's forward momentum while controlling her arm. Vanessa lost her balance.

The movement was swift, controlled, and intended to move the attacker away.

But Vanessa's high heels slid across the polished marble.

She stumbled backward.

Directly toward the enormous celebration cake.

"No—!"

Her desperate scream echoed through the ballroom.

A second later, she crashed into the five-tier masterpiece.

The impact shattered the elaborate sugar decorations.

White frosting exploded across the table.

Hundreds of delicate sugar roses scattered over the floor.

The magnificent cake collapsed around Vanessa in a spectacular avalanche of cream, sponge, and decorative ribbons.

For one unbelievable moment, nobody spoke.

Then the ballroom erupted.

"Oh my God!"

"Did she just fall into the cake?"

"Someone help her!"

Vanessa sat amid the wreckage, her magenta gown covered in frosting.

Her carefully styled blonde hair was tangled with cream and crushed sugar flowers.

A white rose rested absurdly on her shoulder.

Her diamond necklace glittered beneath a thick layer of icing.

Photographers began taking pictures.

Flash after flash illuminated the scene.

A few guests gasped in sympathy.

Others struggled to suppress their laughter.

But Naomi did not laugh.

She remained standing several feet away, watching Vanessa carefully.

Her expression was grave.

Vanessa had tried twice to hurt her.

And Naomi had used only enough force to stop the assault.

Ethan stared at the destroyed cake.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at Naomi.

"What happened?" he asked quietly.

Before Naomi could answer, Vanessa began screaming.

"THAT WOMAN IS INSANE!"

She struggled to her feet, slipping slightly on the frosting.

"She attacked me! She threw me into the cake!"

Her voice cracked with rage.

"Ethan! Fire her! Have her arrested!"

Naomi remained silent.

Vanessa pointed a trembling finger at her.

"She's dangerous! She's violent! She doesn't belong in this house!"

Ethan looked around the ballroom.

Hundreds of faces stared back at him.

Some were shocked.

Some were disgusted.

Others were already recording the confrontation on their phones.

He had spent years negotiating billion-dollar contracts.

He had stood before hostile shareholders and powerful politicians.

But he had never felt shame quite like this.

Because the situation had occurred in his home.

Under his authority.

And for weeks, he had allowed the warning signs to go unanswered.

"Ethan!" Vanessa sobbed. "Do something!"

He approached her slowly.

For a fleeting moment, she believed he would defend her.

Instead, he stopped several feet away.

"You're right about one thing, Vanessa."

She wiped frosting from her cheek.

"What?"

"Something needs to be done."

Her expression brightened.

"Exactly! Get security!"

Ethan looked at Naomi.

The housekeeper stood perfectly composed, her gray uniform slightly wrinkled where Vanessa had grabbed it.

Then he looked back at his fiancée.

"But Naomi isn't the person who destroyed this evening."

Vanessa blinked.

"What?"

"You are."

The words seemed to strike her harder than the fall.

"Ethan, don't you dare—"

"No, Vanessa."

His voice became firm.

"For once, you're going to listen."

He turned toward the gathering crowd.

"Marcus, bring me the microphone."

The security director stepped forward.

Vanessa watched with growing panic.

"What are you doing?"

Ethan accepted the microphone.

"Something I should have done a long time ago."

And when he raised it to his lips, the entire ballroom fell silent.

Chapter 6: The Truth Before Three Hundred Witnesses

"Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention?"

Ethan Whitmore's voice echoed through the ballroom speakers.

The string quartet had stopped playing.

Waiters stood motionless beside their service stations.

Reporters lowered their champagne glasses and reached for their phones.

At the center of the ballroom, Vanessa Sterling stood surrounded by the ruins of her engagement cake.

Her face was streaked with mascara and frosting.

"Ethan," she whispered urgently, "please don't embarrass me any further."

He looked at her.

"That depends on whether you consider the truth embarrassing."

A nervous murmur spread through the room.

Vanessa stared at him.

"What are you talking about?"

Ethan faced the guests.

"Tonight was supposed to celebrate my upcoming marriage to Vanessa Sterling."

Several people applauded uncertainly.

He raised one hand.

"Please. There's something you all deserve to know."

Vanessa's father, Richard Sterling, stepped forward.

"Ethan, perhaps this discussion would be better held privately."

Ethan met his gaze.

"That's how I've handled things for too long, Richard. Quietly. Privately. Hoping problems would disappear."

Richard's expression hardened.

"Careful, son."

"I'm not your son."

The ballroom went completely silent.

Ethan took a breath.

"Over the past several weeks, members of my household staff have been threatened, insulted, and falsely accused of wrongdoing."

Vanessa shook her head.

"That's ridiculous!"

"Some employees were so frightened they considered leaving their jobs."

"Ethan, they're exaggerating!"

"Others were afraid to report what happened because they believed I wouldn't protect them."

Naomi lowered her eyes.

She had not expected him to admit that publicly.

Ethan continued.

"And tonight, in front of all of you, my fiancée attempted to assault one of those employees."

Vanessa screamed.

"She attacked me!"

"No, Vanessa. We saw what happened."

"She threw me into the cake!"

"After you tried to strike her repeatedly."

Vanessa turned desperately toward the guests.

"Surely you don't believe this!"

An older woman stepped forward.

"I was standing right there. You tried to kick the housekeeper."

Another guest nodded.

"And then you tried to hit her."

Vanessa's mouth opened, but no words came out.

Ethan turned toward Marcus Ortiz.

"Please show the recordings we reviewed."

The massive projection screen behind the stage illuminated.

Instead of the romantic photographs prepared for the engagement celebration, the first security recording appeared.

It showed Vanessa entering the drawing room.

She looked around.

Then deliberately tipped a glass of red wine onto an expensive rug.

A few minutes later, Naomi entered.

Vanessa pointed at the stain and ordered her to clean it.

The audio captured her mocking voice.

"Get on your knees. That's what servants are for."

A shocked murmur passed through the room.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

"Turn that off!"

Ethan did not move.

The next recording showed Vanessa inside her bedroom.

She removed diamond earrings from a jewelry case and hid them beneath a chair.

Moments later, she called for help and accused Naomi of theft.

One of the reporters whispered, "Unbelievable."

Another began typing rapidly.

The third recording showed Vanessa insulting Mrs. Bennett in the hallway.

"You people should be grateful I allow you to work here."
