Across the room, Naomi noticed Vanessa approaching.

She was carrying a tray of champagne toward a group of guests near the dance floor.

Mrs. Bennett appeared beside her.

"Are you all right?" the older woman whispered.

"Perfectly."

"Miss Sterling has been drinking."

"I noticed."

Mrs. Bennett looked worried.

"She keeps watching you."

Naomi glanced toward Vanessa.

"Then let her watch."

"You don't seem frightened of anything."

Naomi gave a small smile.

"Everyone is frightened of something, Mrs. Bennett. The important thing is what we do with that fear."

A moment later, Marcus Ortiz approached.

"Naomi, could I speak to you?"

"Certainly."

He lowered his voice.

"Mr. Whitmore asked me to monitor Miss Sterling tonight. We have staff positioned near the exits."

"Why?"

"He's concerned she may cause a scene."

Naomi observed the ballroom.

"Then keep your team focused on protecting the guests. Don't let a personal argument become a security incident."

Marcus nodded.

"You sound like you've done my job before."

"Something similar."

Naomi continued walking.

She had already identified several details.

Vanessa's movements were becoming less controlled.

Her laughter was too loud.

She was drinking too quickly.

Most importantly, whenever Ethan looked in Naomi's direction, Vanessa's expression shifted from irritation to genuine hatred.

Naomi knew the pattern.

Jealousy had become humiliation.

Humiliation was becoming aggression.

But she hoped Vanessa would stop short of violence.

At nine thirty, the quartet finished a romantic arrangement, and the guests began gathering around the center of the ballroom.

Richard Sterling raised a champagne glass.

"Tonight, we celebrate the joining of two extraordinary families!"

Applause filled the room.

Vanessa stood beside him, smiling like a queen.

Richard continued.

"The Sterling and Whitmore families have always shared a vision of success, prosperity, and greatness."

Ethan remained silent.

He knew that the financial partnership Richard was praising was already being reviewed by his legal team.

Vanessa noticed his expression.

"What's wrong with you?" she whispered.

"We need to talk after the speech."

"About what?"

"About us."

Her eyes narrowed.

Then she saw Naomi standing near the edge of the dance floor.

Naomi was offering champagne to a group of guests.

Ethan glanced toward her, briefly acknowledging something Marcus had whispered to him earlier.

Vanessa misunderstood the glance.

Her jealousy erupted.

He wants her here. He respects her more than me.

The thought burned through her.

She had spent years cultivating her image, perfecting her appearance, and securing an engagement to one of Boston's wealthiest bachelors.

And somehow, a woman in a gray uniform had made her feel insignificant.

Vanessa decided that the entire ballroom needed to see exactly where Naomi belonged.

She stepped away from her father.

Her heels clicked sharply against the marble.

Naomi saw her coming.

The housekeeper adjusted the silver tray in her left hand.

Vanessa approached with a beautiful smile that never reached her eyes.

"Naomi," she said sweetly.

"Miss Sterling."

"Enjoying the party?"

"I'm working, ma'am."

"Of course. That's all you're good for."

Several nearby guests turned.

Naomi remained silent.

Vanessa moved closer.

"Tell me something. Do you think you're special because Ethan speaks to you?"

"Mr. Whitmore speaks to all his employees."

"Don't play innocent."

Vanessa's smile vanished.

"I think you need a lesson in humility."

She suddenly stepped forward.

Her right leg swung upward in a vicious kick aimed at Naomi's thigh.

A woman nearby screamed.

The champagne glasses flashed beneath the chandeliers.

But the kick never landed.

Naomi's right hand moved faster than anyone could follow.

Her fingers closed around Vanessa's ankle.

Firmly.

Precisely.

Without hesitation.

The music seemed to disappear.

Vanessa's leg remained suspended in the air.

Naomi stood motionless, the silver tray still balanced in her left hand.

Three hundred guests stared in disbelief.

And for the first time in her privileged life, Vanessa Sterling found herself completely powerless.

Chapter 5: The Maid Who Could Not Be Broken

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Vanessa Sterling stood trembling in the middle of the ballroom, balanced awkwardly on one high heel.

Her face had turned crimson.

Naomi Reyes held her ankle with one hand while the champagne tray remained perfectly steady in the other.

A photographer lowered his camera in disbelief.

Someone whispered, "Did you see that?"

Another guest answered, "She caught her foot in midair."

Vanessa tried to pull away.

"LET GO OF ME!"

Naomi's grip did not tighten.

"Stop struggling, Miss Sterling. You'll hurt yourself."

"YOU FILTHY LITTLE—"

"Vanessa!"

Ethan Whitmore pushed through the gathering crowd.

"What the hell are you doing?"

Vanessa immediately turned toward him.

"Ethan! Your maid attacked me!"

A stunned murmur passed through the guests.

Naomi looked at Ethan.

"Mr. Whitmore, Miss Sterling attempted to kick me. I stopped her."

"She's lying!" Vanessa screamed.

Several guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

They had seen everything.

An elderly senator standing nearby shook his head.

"Young lady, we watched you attack her."

Vanessa ignored him.

"Ethan, tell her to release me!"

Naomi carefully transferred the champagne tray to a nearby service table.

Then she looked directly into Vanessa's eyes.

"Miss Sterling, I'm going to let go now. Please don't attempt to strike me again."

Vanessa's face twisted.

"Who do you think you are?"

Naomi released her ankle.

Vanessa staggered backward and regained her balance.

For a moment, it appeared the confrontation might be over.

Naomi raised her open palm between them.

"Enough."

It was a simple gesture.

But something about her composure made Vanessa feel even smaller.

The cameras were still recording.

Three hundred people had witnessed her humiliation.

And the woman responsible for stopping her was standing there without the slightest sign of fear.

Vanessa could not tolerate it.

"You think you're better than me?" she shrieked.

"No."

"You think you can touch me and get away with it?"

"I think you should calm down."

"DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!"

Vanessa lunged forward, swinging her right hand toward Naomi's face.

Naomi moved only enough to avoid the blow.

Vanessa's hand passed harmlessly beside her cheek.

Gasps erupted around the dance floor.

"Vanessa, stop!" Ethan shouted.

But Vanessa was no longer listening.

She grabbed Naomi's sleeve and tried to shove her backward.

Naomi could feel the fabric tightening beneath Vanessa's fingers.

She had one final opportunity to step away.

"Let go of my uniform," Naomi said quietly.

"MAKE ME!"

The words brought back a memory from Naomi's training.

Margaret Hale stood across from her in an empty gymnasium.

"Remember, Naomi. You cannot control another person's anger. But you can control how much damage that anger causes."
