Chapter 1: The Gathering Storm
The glass-and-steel skyscraper of Sterling Global Headquarters pierced the grey horizon of Chicago, standing as an absolute monument to unbridled corporate wealth. On the eighty-fifth floor, inside the expansive executive atrium, the air was suffocatingly tense. Dozens of high-ranking corporate directors, dressed in pristine bespoke suits and tailored skirts, stood lined up in rigid, uneasy silence.
At the epicenter of this tense atmosphere stood Michael Vance, the newly appointed Vice President of Operations. At thirty-four, Michael possessed the razor-sharp jawline and arrogant posture of a man who believed the world was created solely for his convenience. Holding a leather folder packed with aggressive corporate restructuring plans, he surveyed his subordinates like a monarch inspecting his subjects.
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors at the end of the hall swung open.
An elderly man in a faded, grey button-down shirt and worn trousers stepped into the atrium. His posture was stooped, his silver hair unkempt, and he held a stack of thick financial audit dossiers under his arm. He looked completely out of place against the polished marble floor and gleaming chrome accents.
Michael’s brow furrowed in immediate disgust. "Who allowed this janitor on the executive floor?" he snapped, his voice echoing across the quiet lobby. "Security, get this relic out of my sight before I have the entire night shift fired!"
The old man did not retreat. Instead, he kept walking forward, his calloused hands clutching the folders tighter. "I am here to deliver these audit reports to the executive board," the old man said calmly, his voice rough but steady.
"Did I ask for your life story?" Michael snarled. Stepping forward with aggressive momentum, Michael swung his forearm forward.
The heavy impact struck the old man's chest. The elderly visitor stumbled backward, losing his balance entirely and crashing hard onto the cold marble floor. The thick stack of confidential paper dossiers slipped from his hands, scattering across the polished stone like fallen leaves in an autumn gale.
Several female executives gasped, covering their mouths in utter shock. The security guards hesitated, frozen in place.
Michael stood over the fallen old man, adjusting his silk tie with a smirk of ruthless satisfaction. "That is what happens when you cross boundaries in my company," Michael declared, looking down with pure condescension. "Pick up your trash and crawl back to whatever cellar you came from."
The old man lay on the floor for a long moment, catching his breath. His knuckles were pale against the stone, but his expression remained surprisingly calm. Slowly, painstakingly, he brought his knees beneath him and began gathering the loose papers from the floor one by one.
