The quiet rustle of paper against marble was the only sound echoing through the massive atrium. Every executive stood frozen, caught between deep empathy for the frail old man and fear of Michael’s notorious temper.
The old man carefully stacked the final sheet, straightened the edge against his knee, and slowly pushed himself up from the ground. Though his physical body appeared aged and weary, his posture suddenly shifted. He squared his shoulders, lifted his chin, and looked directly into Michael’s eyes with a gaze so piercing and ice-cold that Michael felt an involuntary shiver run down his spine.
The old man took a measured step toward the young executive.
"I am not here to sweep your floors, Michael," the old man said, his voice dropping an octave into a deep, thunderous baritone that commanded absolute authority. "I am here to fire the employees who falsely believed they owned this company."
Michael’s face flushed with violent red anger. He stepped closer, towering over the old man, his fists clenching tightly at his sides. "How dare you speak to me like that! Do you have any idea who I am? I run this department! I decide who stays and who starves!"
Before Michael could raise his hand again, a terrified screech erupted from the row of executives behind him.
"MICHAEL, STOP! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"
David, the Chief Financial Officer, stumbled out of the lineup, his face completely drained of color. He scrambled forward, his polished leather shoes slipping slightly on the slick marble as he frantically grabbed Michael’s shoulder, pulling him back.
"Get off me, David!" Michael snapped, trying to shake his arm free. "I'm teaching this insolent old fool a lesson in hierarchy!"
"Shut your mouth, you utter idiot!" David shrieked, his voice cracking with sheer, unadulterated panic. "Do you have any idea who he is?!"
Michael frowned, glancing back at the CFO in utter confusion. "He's just an old intruder who—"
"That is Arthur Sterling!" David bellowed, his hands trembling violently as he pointed at the old man. "He is the founder, majority shareholder, and absolute owner of Sterling Global! He built this entire empire!"
The words hung in the air like a heavy hammer blow.
