Michael froze mid-sentence. The arrogant smirk vanished from his lips in a fraction of a second. His mouth fell wide open in absolute horror, his eyes dilating as the blood drained entirely from his face.
Chapter 3: The Audit of Retribution
A heavy, suffocating silence gripped the eighty-fifth floor. The executives who had previously backed Michael's harsh policies shrank back, trying desperately to blend into the shadows of the room.
Arthur Sterling casually dusted off the sleeves of his grey shirt. His eyes, sharp as polished steel, remained locked onto Michael’s pale, trembling face.
"Mr... Mr. Sterling," Michael stammered, his confident demeanor completely shattered. His voice trembled so violently he could barely form words. "I... I had no idea. There was no announcement of your return... I thought you were an intruder..."
"You thought I was a vulnerable old man," Arthur interrupted smoothly, stepping past Michael toward the central podium. "You thought I was someone weak enough for you to push around to prove your pathetic dominance to your peers."
Arthur placed the stack of gathered papers onto the mahogany desk in the center of the atrium. He tapped the top document with a scarred index finger.
"For the past six months, I have been traveling incognito through our regional branches," Arthur declared, his voice easily carrying across the room. "I wanted to see how my company was being managed from the bottom up. And what did I find?"
Arthur picked up the top folder and tossed it at David, the trembling CFO, who caught it with pale hands.
"Embezzlement. Shell companies in Panama. Systematic harassment of junior staff," Arthur continued coldly. "And right here at headquarters, a culture of arrogance led by young narcissists like Michael Vance, who treat human beings like dirt on their shoe."
Michael fell to his knees, the very same marble floor where he had knocked Arthur down minutes prior. "Sir, please! I worked eighty hours a week for this firm! I increased quarterly profits by twelve percent!"
"You increased profits by stripping employee pensions and cutting workplace safety protocols!" Arthur roared, slamming his palm onto the desk. The thunderous sound made every manager in the room jump. "You didn't build this company, Michael. My late brother and I poured thirty years of sweat, blood, and tears into these foundation stones. You merely inherited a title and used it as a whip."
Arthur turned to the head of human resources, who stood quaking near the elevator bay. "Escort Mr. Vance out of the building immediately. Freeze his stock options, revoke his severance, and hand over these audit files to the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
