Chapter 1 — The Lunch Tray
The cafeteria at Westbridge High was loud enough to shake the windows.
Hundreds of students filled the long tables beneath bright fluorescent lights. Sneakers squeaked against the polished floor. Trays clattered. Someone near the vending machines was laughing so loudly that three people turned to look.
It was an ordinary Tuesday.
Until Emma Carter walked through the doors.
She was sixteen, quiet, and almost impossible to read.
Her dark brown hair fell loosely around her shoulders. A black leather jacket covered the plain gray shirt underneath, and a pair of worn sneakers completed an outfit that seemed deliberately designed to attract as little attention as possible.
Emma carried her lunch tray to an empty seat near the window.
She didn't notice the whispers.
Or maybe she did.
She simply didn't care.
Across the cafeteria, Madison Blake noticed her immediately.
Madison had bright pink hair, expensive clothes, and a social media following larger than some small businesses. She was surrounded by her usual group, including her closest friend, Chloe.
Madison stared at Emma.
"That's her?"
Chloe nodded.
"The transfer student."
Madison smiled.
"She looks miserable."
Chloe laughed.
"Maybe that's just her face."
Madison watched Emma for another few seconds.
There was something about the girl that bothered her.
Emma wasn't looking around to see who was watching.
She wasn't trying to impress anyone.
She wasn't checking her phone.
She wasn't reacting to the whispers.
She simply sat there, eating quietly.
Madison hated that.
At Westbridge, people were supposed to understand the hierarchy.
Everyone knew who mattered.
Everyone knew who didn't.
And Emma Carter clearly hadn't learned the rules.
Madison stood.
"Where are you going?" Chloe asked.
"To teach someone some manners."
Madison grabbed her lunch tray.
Several students noticed her walking toward Emma.
Phones slowly began appearing beneath tables.
People knew Madison.
They knew that when she walked somewhere with that expression, something was about to happen.
Emma looked up only when Madison stopped beside her.
"You're sitting here?"
Emma glanced at the empty tables around them.
"Apparently."
A few students laughed nervously.
Madison's smile disappeared.
"Do you know who I am?"
Emma took another bite.
"No."
That answer made the surrounding conversations suddenly quieter.
Madison leaned closer.
"I'm Madison Blake."
Emma swallowed.
"Okay."
Another wave of nervous laughter spread through the cafeteria.
Madison's face reddened.
"You really don't know when to stop, do you?"
Emma looked directly into her eyes.
"I wasn't talking to you."
That was the moment Madison lost control.
She grabbed her tray with both hands.
And slammed it forward.
Spaghetti, sauce, and pieces of bread flew across the table.
The tray struck Emma's chest.
Red sauce splattered across her black leather jacket, her hair, and her face.
The cafeteria went silent.
A plastic fork bounced onto the floor.
Emma didn't move.
For several seconds, she simply sat there.
Spaghetti hung from the shoulder of her jacket.
Sauce slowly dripped down her sleeve.
Someone whispered:
"Oh my God."
Madison smiled.
She had expected tears.
Anger.
Embarrassment.
Anything.
Instead, Emma slowly raised her eyes.
Her expression was completely calm.
Madison's smile weakened.
Emma wiped a small strand of spaghetti from her cheek.
Madison tilted her head.
"Know your place."
Dozens of phones were now recording.
What Madison didn't know was that one of those phones belonged to a student standing directly beside the cafeteria's security camera.
And that camera was about to become the most important witness in Westbridge High.

Chapter 2 — The Wrong Girl
The silence lasted only three seconds.
Then everything exploded.
Students began shouting.
"Did you see that?"
"She threw the whole tray!"
"Someone recorded it!"
Madison stepped backward, suddenly aware of how many phones were pointed at her.
Chloe immediately moved beside her.
"Madison, let's go."
But Madison wasn't finished.
She looked at Emma.
"What's wrong? Cat got your tongue?"
Emma stood slowly.
She removed her leather jacket.
The cafeteria watched.
Underneath, her gray shirt was covered in red sauce.
Emma folded the jacket over one arm.
Madison smirked.
"Finally. You look upset."
Emma stared at her.
"No."
"What?"
"I'm deciding whether this is worth my time."
