Letters.
A police report.
And one black-and-white picture of a teenage boy.
Her brother, Ethan.
She touched the photograph carefully.
Ethan had been eighteen when he disappeared.
He had been investigating something at the private academy his family had once attended.
According to everyone else, he had simply run away.
Emma never believed that.
Neither had her father.
But without evidence, there was nothing they could do.
Then, six months earlier, Daniel had received a strange message.
A former employee at the academy claimed Ethan had discovered financial records proving that several people had been stealing money from a student scholarship fund.
The employee promised to reveal everything.
Then he disappeared too.
Daniel moved Emma to Westbridge because the school was close to the old academy.
He wanted her safe.
He never expected her to find the same people.
Emma opened her laptop.
She had spent months quietly investigating.
The name appearing again and again was Blake.
Madison's family.
Emma stared at the screen.
Madison Blake wasn't just a popular student.
Her father sat on the board of the foundation that had once funded the academy.
And Emma had recently discovered that the foundation's financial records had missing entries.
She had transferred to Westbridge under a different surname at first.
But someone had found out.
The cafeteria attack hadn't been random.
Madison had been warned that Emma was asking questions.
Emma closed the laptop.
Then her phone buzzed.
Another message.
Meet me behind the old gym tomorrow. Come alone.
Emma stared at it.
She knew she shouldn't go.
But she also knew whoever sent it was frightened.
The next afternoon, she went.
She found Maya waiting.
Emma stopped.
"You sent the messages?"
Maya nodded.
"I didn't know how else to reach you."
"Why?"
Maya looked around nervously.
"Because I know what happened to Ethan."
Emma's entire body went still.
"How?"
"My mother used to work for the foundation."
Emma stepped closer.
"What did she tell you?"
Maya swallowed.
"She said your brother found proof that someone was stealing scholarship money."
"I know that."
"No."
Maya shook her head.
"You don't know the worst part."
She pulled a small flash drive from her pocket.
"My mother copied the records before she quit."
Emma stared at it.
"Why didn't she go to the police?"
"Because she was threatened."
Emma's fingers tightened around the drive.
"By who?"
Maya looked toward the school.
"Madison's father."
A sound came from behind them.
Both girls turned.
Madison stood several yards away.
Her expression wasn't angry.
It was terrified.
"I heard everything."
Emma stared at her.
"What do you want?"
Madison looked at Maya.
"Does that have the records?"
Maya stepped backward.
Madison whispered:
"You don't understand."
Emma moved closer.
"Then explain."
Madison's eyes filled with tears.
"My father knows."
The three girls stood in silence.
Madison wiped her cheek.
"He knows you're investigating Ethan."
Emma's voice hardened.
"How?"
"Because he knows what Ethan found."
Madison looked at Emma.
"And he's scared you're going to find the rest."
For the first time, Emma saw something behind Madison's arrogance.
Fear.
Real fear.
Madison had spent years pretending to be untouchable.
But she was just another person trapped inside a family she couldn't escape.
Emma slowly lowered her guard.
"What happened to Ethan?"
Madison shook her head.
"I don't know."
Then she whispered:
"But my father does."

Chapter 5 — Know Your Place
The flash drive contained enough information to expose years of financial misconduct.
Scholarship money had been redirected.
Donations had disappeared.
Students who desperately needed financial assistance had been rejected while wealthy families received special treatment.
But there was something else.
A folder labeled:
ETHAN CARTER — INCIDENT
Emma opened it.
Her hands trembled.
