Chapter 1 — The Stop
Frank Danner was seventy-one, recently retired, and determined to keep his life quiet.
That afternoon, he was driving home across a nearly empty stretch of highway when red and blue lights appeared behind his pickup.
He checked his speed. He was well below the limit.
Two officers approached when he stopped.
The younger officer introduced himself as Mason Cole. His partner, Barnes, stayed near the cruiser.
Cole asked about the unloaded hunting rifles secured in the truck.
Frank calmly produced his permit.
Cole glanced at it and said, "This permit is expired."
Frank looked at the printed date.
"It isn't."
Cole's expression hardened.
"Step out."
Frank obeyed.
The officer took his wallet, found two thousand dollars, and slipped the cash into his own pocket.
Frank watched him carefully.
He didn't argue.
He didn't reach for the money.
Instead, he said quietly, "Read the permit again."
Cole stared at him.
Then he walked away.
Only after the patrol car disappeared did Frank take out his phone.
The entire encounter had been recorded.
Frank wasn't an ordinary motorist.
He was part of a federal investigation into a pattern of roadside thefts.
