The light revealed an older woman.
Her silver hair was pulled back tightly. She wore a dark coat and held a small bag in one hand.
Evelyn stared.
For a moment, she didn’t understand what she was seeing.
Then she whispered:
“No.””
Michael moved in front of her.
“Mom, stay behind me.””
The woman looked at him sadly.
“I never wanted you to see me like this.””
Sarah’s face had gone completely white.
“Margaret?””
The woman looked at her.
“Yes.””
Sarah shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“That’s not possible.””
Michael looked at Evelyn.
“Who is she?””
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was too painful.
Finally, Sarah whispered:
“My mother.””
The room fell silent.
Evelyn looked at Richard.
Then at Margaret.
Then back at Michael.
“Your mother?””
Sarah nodded slowly.
“My mother died fifteen years ago.””
Margaret lowered her eyes.
“I let people believe that.””
Sarah stared at her.
“You were alive?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Margaret’s face tightened.
“Because Richard was not the only person hiding secrets.””
The words made everyone tense.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Start explaining.””
Margaret looked at the men.
“You have no idea what you’ve walked into.””
Daniel laughed without humor.
“That sentence is getting old.””
Margaret looked at Michael.
“He should have left you out of this.””
Michael’s expression hardened.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“You knew where I was.””
A pause.
“Yes.””
Evelyn looked at her.
The pain in her eyes was impossible to hide.
“You knew my son was alive.””
Margaret looked away.
“I did.””
“And you said nothing?””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“I thought I was protecting him.””
Evelyn’s voice rose.
“Protecting him?””
She pointed toward Michael.
“He lost twenty years.””
Margaret flinched.
“I know.””
“No.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You don’t know.””
Her voice broke.
“You didn’t wake up every morning wondering if your child was cold somewhere.””
She touched Michael’s arm.
“You didn’t look at his childhood photos and wonder what he looked like now.””
Margaret had tears in her eyes.
“I know I failed you.””
Evelyn stared at her.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked everyone.
“But I need to know why.””
Margaret looked around the room.
At the old mansion.
At the people who had finally uncovered the truth.
Then she spoke.
“Because Richard threatened my daughter.””
Sarah froze.
“What?””
Margaret looked at her.
“When you found out about Michael’s investigation, you wanted to help him.””
Sarah’s face changed.
“Yes.””
“But Richard found out.””
Margaret swallowed.
“He told me he would destroy you.””
Sarah shook her head.
“He couldn’t.””
“He could.””
Margaret’s voice became quiet.
“He had evidence.””
“What evidence?””
Margaret looked at Richard.
Richard said nothing.
And that scared everyone.
Margaret continued.
“Richard knew about Sarah’s involvement with Michael.””
Sarah looked confused.
“So?””
“He knew Sarah and Michael were together.””
A silence.
Evelyn looked between them.
“Together?””
Sarah looked away.
Michael didn’t deny it.
Marcus understood first.
“You loved each other.””
Sarah nodded.
“We were going to leave.””
Cole looked at Michael.
“You and Sarah?””
Michael looked at the floor.
“Yes.””
Evelyn’s expression softened.
“Michael…”
He looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“For leaving you.””
The old woman immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was firm.
“No, my son.””
She touched his face.
“You were a child fighting monsters.””
Michael closed his eyes.
The moment almost broke everyone.
Then Richard spoke.
“You still don’t understand.””
Everyone turned.
He stood near the staircase.
Watching.
Waiting.
“You think this story has heroes and villains.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Doesn’t it?””
Richard smiled sadly.
“No.””
He looked at Evelyn.
“Your husband knew the truth.””
Evelyn stiffened.
“What?””
“Thomas knew Daniel Mercer was not just a victim.””
Michael turned.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard looked at him.
“Ask your mother.””
Everyone looked at Evelyn.
Her face changed.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Yes, you do.””
The old woman went silent.
Cole noticed.
“Evelyn?””
She looked away.
Michael stared at her.
“Mom.””
The pain in his voice forced her to answer.
“There’s something I never told anyone.””
Nobody spoke.
“After Daniel died…”
She stopped.
Then continued.
“Thomas found me outside the house.””
Michael frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn looked at him.
