Evelyn grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

Michael looked back.

She touched his face.

A mother’s touch.

The same one she had given him as a child.

“I waited twenty years.””

Michael swallowed.

“I know.””

“I’m not waiting again.””

A small smile appeared.

“Then don’t.””

The officers led him downstairs.

Evelyn watched him disappear.

The moment he was gone, something inside her changed.

The frightened woman with the walker was gone.

The woman who had begged four strangers to pretend to be her sons was gone.

Marcus noticed.

“Evelyn.””

She looked at him.

“We need to find the evidence.””

Cole nodded.

“She’s right.””

Daniel looked toward Richard.

“And we need to figure out how he turned this around.””

Richard said nothing.

Sarah walked toward him.

“You framed him.””

Richard looked at his daughter.

“No.””

“You let him take the blame.””

A pause.

Richard’s silence was the answer.

Sarah’s face hardened.

“I spent my entire life thinking you protected me.””

Richard looked away.

“I did.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You protected yourself.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“Sarah.””

Sarah turned.

Her eyes were full of pain.

“You knew too.””

Margaret looked down.

“Yes.””

“How could you?””

Her mother’s voice broke.

“Because I was afraid.””

Sarah stared.

“Everyone was afraid.””

She looked around the room.

“And Michael was the only one who wasn’t.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan, who had been examining the documents from the metal box, suddenly looked up.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

He held one of the papers.

“The arrest.””

Marcus frowned.

“What about it?””

Ethan pointed.

“The police arrived too quickly.””

Cole looked confused.

“So?””

“So they knew where Michael was.””

Daniel understood.

“You mean someone told them.””

Ethan nodded.

“And they knew exactly what charge to bring.””

Sarah stepped closer.

“Meaning?””

“Meaning this wasn’t an investigation.””

He looked at Richard.

“It was a plan.””

Richard’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Marcus saw it.

“Where is the original evidence?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You know.””

Richard looked at her.

“I know enough to understand you’re making a mistake.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You’re scared.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“Of what?””

“Of what Michael found.””

The old man looked away.

That was all the confirmation they needed.

Sarah moved toward the desk.

“Where did Michael keep the copies?””

Everyone looked at her.

“What copies?””

Sarah looked at them.

“Michael never trusted anyone completely.””

Cole smiled faintly.

“Smart man.””

She searched through the drawers.

“He told me once that the first rule of survival was assuming everyone could betray you.””

Evelyn looked down.

“That sounds like my son.””

Sarah opened a hidden drawer.

Empty.

Her expression changed.

“He moved it.””

Marcus looked around.

“Where would he hide something?””

Evelyn answered quietly.

“Somewhere nobody would think to look.””

Everyone turned.

She walked toward the old fireplace.

Michael had always loved that room.

When he was a child.

When he visited the mansion.

When he was trying to understand the family he came from.

Evelyn touched the stone.

“Thomas taught him.””

She pressed against a small crack.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small recorder.

And a folder.

Sarah whispered:

“He knew.””

Evelyn picked up the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Bank records.

Names.

And one document that made Marcus freeze.

“What is that?””

Evelyn looked.

Her face went pale.

“What?””

Marcus pointed.

The document was a confession.

Signed.

Not by Richard.

Not by William.

By Michael.

Sarah looked confused.

“Why would he sign a confession?””

Evelyn opened it.

Then she understood.

“It’s not a confession.””

Cole stepped closer.

“What is it?””

She looked up.

“A statement.””

She read the first line.

*I, Michael Mercer Harrington, am writing this because I know what my father will try to do if I disappear.*

Everyone became silent.

Michael had known.

He had planned for this.

Evelyn continued.

*Richard Harrington will attempt to blame me for Daniel Mercer’s death.*

Sarah covered her mouth.

“He knew.””

Marcus nodded.

“He knew Richard would do this.””

Evelyn kept reading.

*The person who killed Daniel Mercer is not the person everyone suspects.*

A pause.

Everyone leaned closer.

Then she read the next sentence.

*Richard did not kill Daniel.*

The room went silent.

Cole looked confused.

“What?””

Evelyn stared at the paper.

The next line was worse.

*Richard helped cover it up. But the person who caused Daniel’s death was someone much closer to him.*

Sarah looked at her mother.
