“What did you say?”
“No.”
He stared.
“You said no to a billionaire?”
She stopped.
“I say no to customers every night.”
“Usually about substitutions.”
“Same muscle.”
The manager laughed.
Then:
“Do you regret it?”
She looked toward him.
“No.”
At that moment she meant it.
Two months later, she was less sure.
Her mother’s medical bills increased.
A rent renewal arrived.
Her younger brother lost his job.
The waitress picked up additional shifts.
Sometimes she thought of the billionaire’s card.
She had never taken it.
Good.
Otherwise temptation might have become too easy.
She did not want a rescue story.
Still, money was money.
Pride did not pay rent.
One afternoon she received an envelope at the restaurant.
No company logo.
Inside was a handwritten note in Russian.
The billionaire.
Not a job offer.
He wrote:
I asked my office to find records from my father’s New York visits. Your name was there twenty-three times. You were right. I did not remember you because I did not look.
She read it twice.
Then:
I also found the interpreter reports. He rated you “young, occasionally argumentative, accurate when uncertain.” I assume you will appreciate that more than praise.
She laughed.
Her manager looked over.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
The note continued.
I will not ask you to work for me. I am enclosing something that belongs to you, not to me.
Behind the note was a photocopy.
A recommendation letter.
Written by the late patriarch.
Never sent.
Addressed to the chair of her university language program.
The waitress stopped breathing.
The letter praised her work.
Not extravagantly.
Typical patriarch.
She asks clarification before pretending to understand. This is rarer than fluency.
Then:
If she continues legal translation, she will become useful in rooms where people believe words are merely decoration.
The waitress sat down.
At the bottom, handwritten:
Please make certain financial difficulty does not remove her from the program. If assistance is needed, contact my office.
Date.
Thirteen years earlier.
Her eyes filled.
He had intended to help.
Why was the letter never sent?
No record.
Perhaps staff failed.
Perhaps he changed his mind.
