When his chief financial officer spoke too long, he tapped one finger on the table.

The man stopped.

When the younger strategy director disagreed about freight projections, the billionaire did not argue.

He simply looked at him until the younger man corrected his sentence.

The Black waitress noticed because servers noticed everything.

Not because they were nosy.

Because hospitality required constant awareness.

Who needed water.

Who had finished.

Who was becoming intoxicated.

Who was angry.

Which guest had an allergy.

Which couple was fighting quietly.

Which executive was about to stand without noticing a tray behind his chair.

Service workers were trained observers.

Powerful people often forgot that.

The billionaire forgot completely.

The first course arrived.

Then the second.

The waitress served smoked fish, beet salad, small blini with caviar, and a chilled appetizer the kitchen prepared only for the private room.

The billionaire barely acknowledged any of it.

Instead he switched between English and Russian depending on whom he wanted included.

That was not unusual.

What became unusual was how often he used Russian when speaking about staff.

When another server nearly placed the wrong glass beside the chief financial officer, the billionaire murmured:

“Американцы могут отправить человека на Луну, но не могут запомнить, где стоит бокал.”

Americans can send a man to the moon but cannot remember where a glass goes.

His Russian executives smiled.

The Black waitress continued working.

When the bread arrived slightly later than expected:

“Надеюсь, хлеб пекут с нуля, иначе я не понимаю, что занимает столько времени.”

I hope they are baking the bread from scratch, otherwise I cannot imagine what is taking so long.

Still she said nothing.

She did not hide that she knew Russian because she was ashamed.

There had simply been no reason to announce it.

Russian was part of the restaurant.

Half the menu contained Russian terms.

Several staff members spoke enough for service.

Her own fluency was nobody’s business.

Not yet.

The billionaire became more unpleasant after the second vodka.

Not drunk.

He was too controlled for that.

But alcohol seemed to loosen the small cruelties he usually kept beneath polished manners.
