Arthur took back his deed, gently tapping the edge of the paper against the tiller's handlebars. "My grandfather built this valley with sweat and prayer, ma'am. You might have bought a patch of dirt up on the hill, but as long as a Miller breathes, this ground stays green. Now, you and your binder are trespassing on private farm property. I suggest you turn around before Tom here has to write you a citation for disturbing the peace."

Defeated and humiliated, Victoria clutched her binder to her chest and stormed back toward her SUV in furious silence. Deputy Bradley tipped his hat to Arthur with a knowing smirk, climbing back into his patrol car.

Arthur pulled the starter cord on his tiller. The engine roared to life with a satisfying growl, sending clouds of rich dust into the air as the old farmer turned back to his field, continuing the work his family had started over a century ago.
