The laughter still lingered in the air as the revolving doors sealed behind Richard Morgan, muting the noise of the cold street and replacing it with the soft hum of wealth. Warm air wrapped around him, carrying the scent of polished marble, expensive perfume, and quiet power. For a brief moment, he stood still observing, breathing, remembering.

Then the voice shattered it.

“Get out of here, you poor beggar!”

Heads turned instantly. Eyes followed. Judgments formed.

That was the moment they decided who he was without ever asking.

Richard didn’t flinch. His coat was worn, his shoes scuffed by years of walking paths no one here could imagine, and his shoulders carried the weight of time. But his gaze remained steady, sharp… aware. He studied the chandelier above, the gold trimming along the walls, the flawless smiles that hid careless cruelty.

“I’d like to check in,” he said calmly.

The laughter wasn’t loud but it was enough. Enough to humiliate, if humiliation were something he still feared.

The security guard stepped forward, his stance firm, his expression almost amused. “You think this is a joke? This place isn’t for people like you.”

“I didn’t come here for permission.”

The words weren’t defiant. They were simply… true.

The guard saw a nuisance.

But in front of him stood the man who had once built every inch of the world behind those walls.

At the reception desk, the woman watched like it was a show designed for her amusement. She didn’t rush. She didn’t intervene. In her world, men like him existed only to wait… or to be removed.

“Name?” she asked, her tone flat, already dismissive.

“Richard Morgan.”

She repeated it slowly, as if testing the absurdity of it, then began typing deliberately slow, stretching the moment, letting the whispers bloom behind him.

“Look at him…”

“He actually thinks…”

The system loaded.

And for the smallest fraction of a second her expression cracked.

Recognition.

Or fear.

But just as quickly, she buried it.
