“No reservation under that name,” she said.

Richard’s voice remained even. “Check again.”

The manager approached, drawn by curiosity and the scent of entertainment. His suit was immaculate, his smile sharper than necessary.

“He believes he has a reservation,” the receptionist said.

The manager looked Richard up and down, the corners of his mouth lifting. “Sir, our rooms start at twelve hundred a night.”

This wasn’t about policy anymore. This was about power and they were enjoying it.

Richard felt something settle deep inside him not anger, not yet. Just clarity.

“Please check again.”

They didn’t.

Instead, they made him wait.

Ten minutes passed.

Then twenty.

Then thirty.

Time stretched, bending under the weight of deliberate neglect. Guests came and went, laughter echoed, heels clicked against marble floors. Staff passed him without acknowledgment, as if ignoring him would erase him.

Nearly an hour passed and not one person saw a human being. Only a judgment they had already decided was true.

Richard stood there, still. Watching. Counting.

Memorizing.

Finally, he straightened.

“May I speak with the director?”

The receptionist exhaled loudly, annoyed. “I told you to wait.”

“I did.”

The manager smirked. “The director is busy with important guests.”

Important guests.

The words landed heavier than the insult they revealed everything.
