“I’ll speak with him,” Richard said.
Something shifted in his voice not louder, not harsher… just final.
The director arrived with irritation already written across his face, dismissing the situation before even understanding it.
“What is this?”
“I’m here to check in,” Richard said. “I’ve been waiting.”
“And why should I care?”
A pause.
Silence spread slowly, pulling attention toward them.
“This hotel isn’t for your kind.”
There it was the line that exposed not just what they thought of him, but what they believed about people.
Richard repeated softly, “My kind.”
And then
The splash.
Cold, filthy water crashed over him, soaking his coat, dripping down his face, carrying the smell of neglect and contempt. Gasps echoed. A few stifled laughs broke through, sharp and uncomfortable.
This was the moment they had been waiting for.
The breaking point.
But Richard didn’t move.
Water slid down his skin, his hair clinging to his forehead, his dignity tested in front of an audience that had already decided the ending.
They expected anger.
They expected shouting.
They expected him to collapse under humiliation.
Instead
He removed his coat.
Folded it carefully.
