Chapter 1: The Cry in the Crowd
The burning asphalt of the New York sidewalk radiated heat like a furnace, scorching two pairs of tiny bare feet. Ten-year-old Leo, his face caked in street grime and soot, tightly clutched the trembling hand of his six-year-old sister, Lily. Clad in tattered, filthy clothes that barely fit, the two children stood isolated amidst the rushing tide of businessmen in tailored suits and wealthy pedestrians.
Lily couldn't bear the physical pain any longer. Small glass shards from the broken pavement had bitten into her feet, leaving bloody scratches. She burst into tears, her weeping carving clean tracks through the dirt on her pale cheeks. The passing crowd remained indifferent, stepping around the children as if they were invisible ghosts or mere nuisances on the sidewalk.
Leo turned around and wrapped his frail arms firmly around his sister. With his rough, dirty hands, he gently cradled her messy hair, using his small body as a shield against the coldness of the world. As his chin rested on Lily’s shoulder, Leo’s eyes welled with tears that spilled down his dusty face. He wept not just from hunger or pain, but from sheer, agonizing terror.
Only three days ago, their lives were completely different. Their father, a brilliant engineer, had been abducted from their home after uncovering corrupt corporate secrets. Their mother was seized shortly after, leaving the siblings to escape through the sacrifice of a loyal house guard. Overnight, these privileged children became homeless, penniless, and utterly alone.
"I promise... I will bring us back to Mom and Dad," Leo whispered into his sister's ear, his voice trembling but filled with fierce determination. He felt the worn family photograph tucked inside his torn pocket alongside a crumpled note containing the secret address his father had told him to find in an emergency.
