Darkness descended over the narrow alleys of the city. Leo guided Lily into hiding behind massive dumpsters near a bustling restaurant alley. As night fell, a freezing breeze swept through, causing both children to shiver violently. Leo pulled off his worn, oversized t-shirt to cover his sister, holding her close to share his meager body heat.
Suddenly, heavy, hurried footsteps echoed from the entrance of the alley. Two tall men dressed in dark leather jackets shone bright flashlights into every shadowed corner. They were mercenaries hired by the syndicate to eliminate the children and erase all ties to their father’s evidence.
"Search every corner! Boss said two barefoot kids couldn't have gotten far!" one man growled, his icy voice sending chills down Leo's spine.
The flashlight beam swept within inches of their hiding spot. Terrified, Lily held her breath, pressing both hands over her mouth to muffle her sobs. Leo tightly gripped a jagged wooden plank on the ground, cold sweat dripping from his forehead. He knew that if they were caught, they would never see their parents alive again.
Without warning, a stray cat leaped over a pile of cardboard boxes on the opposite side, making a loud crash. "Over there! Move!" the thugs yelled, taking the bait and rushing toward the noise.
Without hesitating for a second, Leo grabbed Lily’s hand and sprinted in the opposite direction. Their bare, bleeding feet slammed against the harsh cobblestones, but sheer panic overpowered their physical agony. They kept running until the neon signs of the central bus station flickered into view—a small ray of hope in their perilous journey.
