"Boss, we can't keep this fairy tale going much longer," Zane said, his voice laced with heavy stress. "Silas is getting desperate. He sent another message. He knows."

Marcus slammed his heavy glass onto the mahogany desk, shattering the silence. "Silas doesn't know a damn thing! He thinks I bought her story just like she bought mine!"

Chloe’s heart froze in her chest. She pressed her back against the hallway wall, her breath catching in her throat.

"Marcus, listen to reason," Zane pleaded, leaning over the desk. "You’re playing a terrifying game here. You’ve got the girl believing you’re her long-lost saint of a father who went to prison for a crime he didn't commit. If she ever finds out what really happened twenty years ago... if she finds out about Clara..."

"She won't find out!" Marcus growled, his voice dropping into a dark, terrifying register that Chloe had never heard in the diner. "Clara is dead and buried. The past stays in the ground where I put it."

Chloe felt the room spin wildly around her. She placed her trembling hand over her mouth to suppress a gasp. The past stays in the ground where I put it?

"And what about the locket?" Zane asked quietly. "You carved that wolf for Clara, yeah. But you didn't give it to her out of love, Marcus. You gave it to her as a bloody trophy the night you framed her for the heist, stripped her of her family's fortune, and left her to take the fall with the cartel!"

Inside the office, Marcus let out a cruel, guttural laugh. "Clara was a fool. She thought I loved her. She never realized she was just my ticket into her family's trust fund. I let Silas take the public blame for her ruin because it kept the feds off my back while I served my time for that bank job. And now... now Clara’s daughter walks right into my lap carrying the primary access key to Clara’s offshore accounts. That locket isn't just a sentimental trinket, Zane. It’s a high-security hardware crypto wallet containing thirty million dollars of cartel cash that Clara hid before she died."

Zane let out a low whistle. "So the whole 'Father of the Year' performance in the diner...?"

"A theatrical masterpiece," Marcus said coldly, taking another sip of whiskey. "I needed her to trust me completely so she'd hand over the locket willingly once I 'decode' it for her. Silas was hunting her for the same money, but the idiot didn't know how to play the emotional angle. Once I transfer the funds tomorrow morning, Chloe becomes an intolerable liability. We'll stage an 'accident'—make it look like Silas came back to finish the job."

Chloe stood paralyzed in the dark hallway, the icy truth piercing her heart like a serrated blade. The hero who had rescued her from the storm, the man who had cried tears of joy while holding her in his arms, the father she had prayed for her entire life... was a monster. He was the architect of her mother's destruction. The diner confrontation hadn't been an act of paternal redemption—it had been a bloody turf war between two predators fighting over the same helpless prey.
