“Ben,” Calder said without looking around, his voice laced with warning. “You want to explain why a phone call has you shaking?”Ortiz swallowed hard, his throat working against a dry knot. Rain ticked rhythmically against the station windows, and the overhead lights emitted their continuous, thin electrical hum.“That phrase carries emergency precedence, Sheriff,” Ortiz whispered, his eyes locked on the amber light. “Priority flash means immediate, uninhibited handling. It overrides civil communications networks.”“And the rest of it?” Calder demanded.“Black Sky means the caller is operating under continuity protocols,” Ortiz said, his voice trembling. “It means the person making the call is reporting an active security breach—and that the agency holding them is considered compromised until proven otherwise.”The woman’s eyes moved to Ortiz. Something in her cold, stone-like expression softened, but only for a fraction of a second, recognizing the young man’s military training.Calder stared at her, his temper flaring at the suggestion that his station—his domain—was being categorized as “compromised.” With a sudden, aggressive motion, Calder grabbed the black phone cord and yanked it violently from the wall jack. The modular plastic clip snapped with a loud crack. The dead receiver remained pressed against the woman’s ear. She did not flinch, nor did her eyes blink.“There,” Calder sneered, tossing the severed wire onto the counter. “Call’s over.”On the black rectangular device in Calder’s hand, the small pinprick light shifted. The amber hue vanished, replaced by a slow, steady, brilliant emerald green.“No,” the woman replied, setting the dead receiver back into its cradle. “It isn’t.”For the first time since she had been brought into the station, Calder stopped smiling entirely. He set the device down on the counter beside her open bag, reached to his belt, pulled his heavy key ring from his brass clip, and walked deliberately across the room. He inserted the master key into the heavy front door deadbolt and turned it with a sharp, heavy metallic clank. He turned back to face her, his heavy chest heaving under his badge.“Deputy Ortiz,” Calder ordered, his voice dark and uncompromising. “Cuff her.”

The Fracture in the Room

Deputy Ortiz did not move. His hands rested on the back of his chair, his knuckles white, his boots planted firmly onto the checkered floorboards.“Sheriff,” Ortiz said, his voice barely louder than the rain. “If you put steel on her right now, you are committing a federal offense under Title 18. We don't even know who she is.”Calder’s face darkened to a deep, mottled crimson. He took two heavy steps toward Ortiz, his hand resting flat against the leather grip of his sidearm.“I know who she is, Ben! She’s a trespassing civilian who refused a lawful order on Highway 82, driving a vehicle with unregistered government plates, carrying false credentials!”
