“I don't guess, Sheriff Calder,” she said. “The device sitting on your counter is an encrypted pulse-transceiver. The moment I lifted that landline receiver and gave my priority flash authorization, it activated its internal burst array. It didn't just log my location—it transmitted the entire audio stream of this room, along with the digital signatures of the files stored on your station server, directly to the Defense Threat Reduction Agency in Omaha.”Ortiz looked at the tiny black box. The emerald green light was glowing with an intense, unwavering brightness.A low, subterranean rumble began to echo through the station floorboards—not from the rain, but from high above the clouds.

The Arrival of Black Sky

The noise grew from a faint, distant vibration into a deafening, rhythmic thudding that shook the dust from the ceiling tiles.Ortiz ran to the heavy glass windows, cupping his hands against his eyes to look out into the rain-soaked darkness of the parking lot.“Sheriff!” Ortiz screamed over the rising noise. “Look out there!”Through the thick sheets of rain, two massive, twin-rotor MH-47 Chinook helicopters broke through the low cloud deck. Their blinding white searchlights cut through the dark, illuminating the station, the wet asphalt, and the surrounding pine trees in brilliant, trembling beams. The downwash from the giant rotors swept across the parking lot like a hurricane, ripping the wooden sign off the station’s front entrance and sending it crashing against Calder’s patrol cruiser.Calder stared out the window, his eyes wide with horror as he realized the magnitude of what he had brought down upon his own head.“This is my county...” Calder muttered, his voice trembling, his authority crumbling into dust. “They can’t do this... I’m the elected Sheriff...”“Under Black Sky Four protocols,” Evelyn Vance said, her voice piercing through the roar of the helicopter engines outside, “your civil authority was suspended the moment you severed that telephone cord.”Before Calder could reach for his gun, the heavy wooden front doors of the station were blown inward with a terrifying, thunderous explosion.A pair of linear breaching charges detonated against the lock frame, blowing the heavy oak doors off their hinges and sending shards of wood and glass flying across the room.A thick cloud of gray smoke and flash-powder residue flooded the booking hall.Through the haze, eight figures dressed in matte-black tactical gear, complete with night-vision visors and ballistic helmets, swept into the station with terrifying speed. Their carbines were raised, red laser targeting dots dancing across the mint-green walls and resting directly on Calder’s chest.“FEDERAL AGENTS! ON THE FLOOR! DROP TO YOUR KNEES NOW!” a voice shouted through a megaphoned visor.Calder stood frozen for half a second, his fingers hovering near his holster.
