A tactical operator lunged forward, grabbing Calder’s arm with an iron grip, driving him downward onto his knees against the hard linoleum floor. Calder’s service weapon was unholstered and kicked across the room, clattering uselessly against the wall. Two other operators moved with surgical precision, securing the perimeter, sweeping the back hallway, and placing a gentle, protective escort around Evelyn Vance.A tall man wearing a dark trench coat over a gray suit walked through the ruined doorway, stepping unhurriedly over the splintered remains of the front door.He pulled a silver credential case from his coat, holding it out briefly toward Evelyn.“Inspector Vance,” the man said, his voice loud and clear over the thundering rotors outside. “Special Agent Miller, Tactical Response Unit. We received your priority flash eleven minutes ago.”Evelyn Vance picked up her leather handbag from the counter, slinging it neatly over her shoulder. She then picked up the small black rectangular device, pressing a hidden recessed button along its side. The emerald green light blinked twice and went dark.“Thank you, Agent Miller,” Evelyn said calmly. “Sheriff Calder was kind enough to hold the device for me while the satellite handshake completed.”Agent Miller looked down at Calder, who was lying face down on the floor, his arms pinned behind his back with heavy plastic flex-cuffs.“Is he the primary facilitator?” Miller asked.“He is,” Evelyn confirmed. “He issued the transit passes for the depleted uranium casks from Silo Bravo. He also attempted to interfere with federal communications equipment during an active containment operation.”Miller looked toward Deputy Ortiz, who was standing against the back wall with his hands raised high, his face pale but resolute.“What about the deputy?” Miller asked.Evelyn looked at Ortiz, offering him a small, respectful nod.“The deputy recognized the protocol,” she said. “He advised his superior to comply. Leave him out of the processing.”Miller nodded to his operators. “Get Calder into the transport. Seize every hard drive, logbook, and filing cabinet in this facility.”Calder struggled against the plastic ties, his face pressed hard against the dirty floorboards, his voice hoarse and desperate.“You can’t do this to me!” Calder screamed. “I’m Sheriff Wallace Calder! I’ve served this county for forty years!”Evelyn Vance walked up to him, her polished heels clicking sharply against the floorboards. She stopped right beside his head, looking down at him with the same unyielding, calm expression she had maintained since the beginning.“Forty years is a long time, Wallace,” she whispered, her voice carrying clearly over the storm outside. “It’s a pity you spent the last hour ending it.”She turned on her heel, her burgundy blazer vanishing into the blinding white searchlights of the storm outside, leaving behind a ruined station, a broken legacy, and the quiet, undeniable weight of the law.
