Claire Morgan wasn't just an attorney.
She was the county's chief prosecutor.
Chapter 2 — The Woman With the Briefcase
Claire had arrived at Daniel's house the previous evening after a late flight. Her SUV had been parked in the driveway because Daniel's family had offered her a place to stay while she handled a case nearby.
She had expected coffee and a quiet morning.
Instead, she found a metal boot attached to her vehicle.
"May I see the order?" Claire asked.
Evelyn hesitated before handing it over.
Claire read it carefully. The plate number was wrong. Then she noticed something else.
"The order lists a different property address."
Daniel stared at the page.
Claire continued, "This is not your address."
Evelyn straightened. "The system generated the order."
"Systems don't sign enforcement documents. People do."
The contractor quietly removed his gloves.
Claire looked at him. "You were dispatched for the plate on this paper?"
"Yes."
"And this vehicle has a different plate?"
"Yes."
"Then document that."
He pulled out his phone.
Evelyn looked irritated. "This is becoming unnecessarily complicated."
Claire closed the folder.
"No. It became complicated when someone tried to immobilize my car using an incorrect plate and an unrelated address."
