Elena’s entire body froze. The world around her seemed to grind to a sudden, horrifying halt. "What did you say?"
Chapter 22
The roar of distant aircraft engines seemed to fade into a hollow, deafening drone. Elena took two rapid steps toward Julian Vance, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
"What did you say about my father?" she demanded, her voice shaking with an unbearable mixture of rage and terror.
Vance halted, looking back over his shoulder as the officers pulled him toward the open door of the police transport.
"Arthur Sterling didn't have the stomach to kill Edward Carter," Vance murmured, his voice dripping with venomous satisfaction. "And neither did I. We didn't need to. Because the person who slipped the aconite into his nightly brandy wasn't an outsider, Elena. It was someone Edward trusted with his life. Someone who sat at your family dinner table every Sunday."
Elena felt the ground tilt beneath her feet. "You're lying to save your skin!"
"Am I?" Vance sneered. "Check the offshore account logs we left behind in Vault Unit 4. Look at the beneficiary designated on page forty-seven. Arthur and I were just the financiers, Elena. The real architect of the Apex Consortium... has been sleeping under your own roof for thirty years."
Before Elena could scream another question, the detectives shoved Vance into the back of the armored vehicle and slammed the heavy reinforced doors shut. The cruiser sped away, its sirens screaming into the London dawn.
Elena stood paralyzed on the tarmac, the damp wind whipping her hair across her face. Marcus hurried to her side, his hand resting supportively on her shoulder.
"Elena, don't listen to him," Marcus said urgently. "He's trying to manipulate you. He's trying to break your spirit when you've just brought down his entire organization!"
"No, Marcus," Elena whispered, her face as pale as marble. "My father... three days before he died, he changed his will. He told me he was afraid of someone. I thought he was just exhausted from the airline's regulatory battles. I didn't listen to him."
Sarah Jenkins came running down the tarmac toward them, her tablet glowing with an urgent incoming transmission.
"Mrs. Carter! Marcus!" Sarah cried, breathless from running. "The technical team just decrypted the master ledger recovered from Flight 882's cargo hold!"
Elena spun around. "Who is the primary beneficiary of the Apex offshore holding trust? Tell me, Sarah!"
Sarah stared at the screen, her hand trembling violently. Her eyes rose to meet Elena's, filled with pure, unadulterated shock.
"It's... it's not a board member, Mrs. Carter," Sarah stammered, her voice barely a whisper. "The beneficiary is registered under the legal name... Evelyn Carter. Your mother."
Elena took a staggering step backward, the air completely rushing out of her chest.
Before she could process the horrifying revelation, her personal satellite phone vibrated violently in her pocket.
With trembling fingers, Elena pulled out the phone.
A new, unlisted incoming call flashed across the screen.
Elena brought the phone to her ear with a shaking hand.
From the other end of the line, the gentle, familiar, and terrifyingly calm voice of her mother echoed softly into the receiver:
*"You flew too high, Elena, my sweet girl. And now... you have no idea how far you are about to fall."*
The line went dead, leaving Elena staring into the gathering storm clouds above the London sky.
Chapter 23
The cold tarmac of Heathrow Airport felt as if it were tilting beneath Elena Carter’s designer boots. The freezing English drizzle coated her face, but she could feel neither the wind nor the biting cold. Her mother’s words continued to reverberate inside her skull like an artillery shell detonating in an empty cathedral: *“You flew too high, Elena, my sweet girl. And now... you have no idea how far you are about to fall.”*
Marcus reached out, grabbing Elena’s arm just as her knees buckled. "Elena! Breathe! Look at me!"
Elena turned her hollow, bloodshot eyes toward the man who had stood by her through every ambush, every hijacked flight, and every boardroom conspiracy. "My mother, Marcus. All this time... while I mourned my father, while I fought Arthur Sterling and the board... the mastermind pulling the strings of the cartel was Evelyn Carter."
Sarah Jenkins stood shivering, holding the waterproof military-grade tablet displaying the decrypted files of Flight 882. "Mrs. Carter, the encrypted shell accounts don't just tie her to Apex Holdings. She holds eighty percent of the bearer shares in the logistics firm that supplied the fraudulent parts to Global Continental. It goes deeper. The trust wasn't created yesterday. It was established fourteen years ago."
