His eyes found Elena Carter’s face.

He saw the dark blazer. He saw the quiet, unwavering posture. And then his eyes locked onto the bright, swelling red handprint marked across Elena’s right cheek.

Every drop of blood drained from Captain Reynolds’ face until his skin turned the color of chalk. His jaw dropped. The stern, commanding air of a veteran pilot vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated horror.

Chapter 2

Captain Marcus Reynolds did not move for three full seconds. The air in the galley grew so still that the faint hiss of the cabin ventilation sounded like a hurricane.

Victoria, still kneeling on the carpet, misunderstood his frozen silence. She assumed her captain was paralyzed by righteous anger on her behalf. She climbed to her feet, brushing nonexistent dust from her navy skirt, a smug, triumphant smirk returning to her lips as she leaned toward Marcus’s shoulder.

“Look at her, Marcus,” Victoria sneered, pointing her finger like a loaded weapon. “She refuses to move. She assaulted me right in front of the passengers. Call the tower right now. Tell them to send the port authority SWAT unit. I want her dragged out in chains. I’m pressing full charges. She’s never flying on any airline in this country again!”

Marcus slowly turned his head to look at Victoria. His eyes were wide, dilated with an absolute, gut-churning dread.

“Shut up,” he whispered.

Victoria blinked, her smirk faltering. “What? Marcus, did you hear me? She—”

“I said *shut your mouth, Victoria!*”

The captain’s voice tore through the First Class cabin like a crack of thunder. It wasn't the voice of a man defending his purser; it was the voice of a man watching an artillery shell drop onto his own bunker.

Victoria recoiled, her hand flying to her throat. “Marcus? Why are you yelling at me? I’m the victim here!”

Marcus didn't answer her. He pushed past Victoria with such urgency that his shoulder clipped hers, nearly sending her stumbling into the beverage cart. He stepped down the narrow galley threshold, his black dress shoes sinking into the First Class carpeting, and stopped exactly three feet in front of the woman in seat 2A.

He removed his pilot’s cap, tucking it under his left arm. Then, in front of sixty passengers, in front of the smartphone cameras, in front of the smirking venture capitalist whose jaw had now dropped completely slack, the four-stripe captain bowed his head.

“Mrs. Carter,” Marcus choked out, his voice trembling so hard the metallic wings pinned to his chest rattled. “Mrs. Carter… my God. Are you alright?”

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush bone.

Victoria froze in place, her hand still raised in the air. “M-Mrs. Carter? Marcus, what are you talking about? Who is she?”

Marcus whipped around to face Victoria, his face mottled with furious red veins. His voice shook with a lethal combination of terror and outrage.

“You idiot,” Marcus rasped, every syllable dripping with venom. “Do you have any idea who that is? Look at her! That is Elena Carter. Founder. Chairwoman. Majority shareholder of Horizon Global Holdings. She doesn’t just own the ticket for seat 2A, Victoria. *She owns the entire airline.*”

The cabin erupted into a chorus of sharp, collective gasps.

“What?” someone whispered in row three.

“No way…”
