Elena pulled up a chair and turned to Maya. The young woman trembled, clutching her hands in her lap.
"M-Mrs. Carter," Maya stammered, her voice shaking. "I’m so sorry. I should have pulled Victoria away sooner. I should have tackled her before she touched you. I was just... I was so afraid. She always told us that Arthur Sterling would destroy our careers if we crossed her."
Elena reached across the table and took Maya’s trembling hands into her own. Her touch was warm, steady, and motherly.
"Maya, look at me," Elena instructed softly.
Maya lifted her tearful eyes.
"You stood up when everyone else stayed seated," Elena said, her voice filled with deep sincerity. "You apologized for her bad behavior before you even knew who I was. You offered me water. You tried to protect dignity in that cabin. That takes more courage than flying through a Category 5 thunderstorm."
"I... I do?" Maya whispered.
"Starting tomorrow, Maya, you are being reassigned to our International Lead Flight Service Training division," Elena announced. "You will train incoming flight crews on ethics, passenger empathy, and conflict de-escalation. Your salary will reflect your new executive instructor status."
Maya burst into fresh tears, this time of overwhelming relief and gratitude, burying her face in her hands.
Elena then turned to Marcus. "And Captain Reynolds."
"Arthur Sterling’s nepotism nearly ruined the airline my father poured his soul into," Elena said gravely. "Tonight, the board will remove him. I need someone of impeccable honor to oversee our new Fleet Ethics and Safety Oversight Committee—with direct reporting power to me. Will you take the post?"
Marcus Reynolds felt a lump form in his throat. For years, he had watched corporate yes-men degrade the airline he loved. Now, the owner was handing him the sword to clean house.
Marcus sat straight and nodded firmly. "It would be the honor of my career, Mrs. Carter."
Chapter 9
Midnight struck.
Inside the private office of the O'Hare operations suite, three large monitor screens lit up with the faces of the twelve members of the Apex Air Board of Directors.
Among them, looking pale, sickly, and utterly defeated, was Arthur Sterling. He had retreated to his downtown penthouse, frantically attempting to lobby his four closest allies on the board during the ninety-minute drive home. He appeared on camera wearing a fresh suit, trying desperately to project an air of wounded innocence.
"Members of the Board," Arthur began, his voice projecting calculated urgency before anyone else could speak. "I called this emergency session because our company is under an existential public relations threat caused by an unhinged flight attendant and an extreme overreaction by Mrs. Carter. Elena’s unilateral actions tonight—promising hundreds of thousands in refunds without CFO approval, orchestrating high-profile arrests on the tarmac—have tanked our stock by seven points. We need a steady hand, not emotional retaliation!"
Arthur paused, expecting his allies to chime in.
Silence met him across the Zoom grid.
"Are you finished, Arthur?"
Elena’s voice cut through the digital line like ice. Her face appeared on the primary screen, sharp, calm, and regal.
"Elena," Arthur hissed, trying to assert dominance. "You are emotionally compromised by the assault you suffered. As CEO, I am recommending we place you on an administrative leave from the chairmanship until this media cycle blows over!"
"David," Elena said, ignoring Arthur completely. "Present Exhibit A."
Her lead legal counsel brought up a document share on the screen. It was not the incident reports from earlier.
It was a detailed audit of Arthur Sterling’s executive discretionary account, cross-referenced with offshore shell corporations based in Belize.
"For the past three years," Elena revealed, her voice steady and implacable, "Arthur Sterling has diverted over four point two million dollars from the aircraft maintenance and crew safety budget into an unlisted corporate account. That account was used to pay off six prior victims of workplace harassment, fund private chartered jets for non-company executives, and provide a luxury downtown apartment leased under the name of Victoria Vance."
Gasps erupted across the digital board room. Even Arthur’s staunch allies stared at their screens in horror.
"That's... that's proprietary executive consulting!" Arthur stammered, his face turning an ash-gray hue. "That’s confidential!"
"It’s grand larceny, embezzlement, and corporate fraud, Arthur," Elena replied. "And the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s White Collar Crime division received this entire file twenty minutes ago."
Chapter 10
Arthur Sterling’s jaw hung open. The room around him seemed to dissolve into static. The allies he had counted on to shield him quickly turned off their cameras or looked away in disgust.
