A deafening screech tore through the cabin. The aircraft slid sideways instantly, tires smoking, biting through crusts of black ice. Vance engaged reverse thrusters, but the right engine sucked in blowing ice and flamed out with a concussive bang, yawing the heavy jet dangerously toward the snow-covered embankment.
"Rudder full right! Differential braking!" Vance screamed, his boots dancing on the pedals.
Metal shrieked against rock as the Dreamliner’s right wingtip clipped an ancient abandoned radar tower, shearing off the winglet in an explosion of fiberglass and sparks. But Vance held the center line with superhuman precision.
With one final, bone-jarring skid, the Boeing Dreamliner slid to a complete halt in a towering spray of snow, sitting dead in the center of the frozen arctic runway.
Silence fell over the cabin. Deep, total, breathtaking silence.
Then, the sound of crying, followed by applause, and then gasps of relief from the passengers.
"Evacuation slides! Deploy emergency doors on the port side only!" Vance ordered, slumping forward over the yoke, his hands trembling with exhaustion. "Elena... we made it."
"Not yet," Elena said quietly, looking through the frosted cockpit glass.
The three black armored vehicles had already moved into a blocking formation around the nose of the plane. Men in heavy arctic tactical gear, armed with submachine guns, leaped from the rear doors, setting up an impenetrable perimeter around the Dreamliner.
From the central armored truck, the passenger door swung open.
A tall woman stepped out into the howling blizzard. She wore a long cashmere coat trimmed with silver fox fur, her blonde hair immaculate, a silver-plated walking cane in her gloved right hand.
Evelyn Carter had arrived.
Chapter 42
The frigid arctic wind howled through the opened forward cabin door as Elena stepped out onto the emergency airstair, refusing to hide behind her crew. The freezing air struck her face like needles, but she stood tall, descending the metal steps one by one until her boots crunched onto the packed black ice of the Greenland runway.
Behind her, Vance, Marcus, and two brave passengers stepped onto the platform, ready to defend their aircraft, but Elena raised a single hand, signaling them to stay back.
Evelyn walked forward, flanked by four masked mercenaries with assault rifles leveled at Elena’s chest. The matriarch stopped five paces away, her blue eyes gleaming with absolute malice and triumphant superiority.
"A magnificent landing, Elena," Evelyn said, her voice carrying over the whistling arctic gale. "You truly are Arthur's daughter. Resourceful, stubborn, and completely blind to the larger chessboard."
"It's over, Evelyn," Elena said, her voice hard as bedrock. "The moment this plane went off radar, NORAD and NATO command were alerted. There are F-35s scrambling from Thule Air Base right now. You have five minutes before this entire fjord is crawling with tactical strike teams."
Evelyn laughed—a cold, dismissive sound that echoed against the frozen granite cliffs.
"Do you really think NATO is coming to save you, Elena?" Evelyn smiled, a look of profound, chilling pity in her eyes. "Who do you think authorized my extraction from Zurich? Who do you think provided the unmarked military transport that herded your little plane into this valley?"
Elena’s heart gave a sudden, cold lurch. "What are you talking about?"
"Sterling Global was never just a laundering ring for dirty politicians," Evelyn said softly, stepping closer until Elena could smell the scent of lavender and expensive tobacco. "We were the financial spine of an organization that sits above prime ministers and intelligence directors. An entity known only to its founders as the Leviathan. I didn't escape prison, Elena. I was summoned."
Before Elena could answer, an immense, low-frequency hum vibrated through the frozen ground beneath their boots—so powerful that the snow on the wings of the Dreamliner began to dance.
From the dark, churning sky above the fjord, descending silently through the heavy snow squall, came an aircraft unlike anything in conventional military arsenals.
It was massive, triangular, entirely silent, and surrounded by a shimmering, distortion-like halo of superheated air.
As the colossal craft hovered motionless fifty feet above the runway, its spotlights bathed both Elena and Evelyn in blinding, pure white light.
A mechanized, synthesized voice boomed from the sky, shaking the ice beneath their feet:
*"Evelyn Carter. Your failure to secure the master encryption keys within the designated window has rendered you obsolete."*
Evelyn’s triumphant smile instantly vanished, replaced by an expression of sheer, paralyzing horror.
She turned her head slowly toward Elena, her voice shaking violently in the freezing wind:
"Elena... run."
